Williamsburg, KY – The #6 Patriots returned home for a mid-week matchup against the Union Bulldogs, where UC recorded a 9-0 victory for their 12th run-rule of the season. Cumberlands' offense recorded 9 runs on 12 hits while the pitching staff tallied two strikeouts and only allowed four hits.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first inning was sparked by a leadoff single from Carly Oliver and a hit to right field from Amber Gainer. With runners in scoring position, a rip to the left center field fence from jade Gainer pushed the Pats first two runs across for a 2-0 lead. Following, Makenzie Keatts stroked a double off the right field fence to raise UC to a 3-0 lead. Amber Atkins followed suit with a shot through the left side to put runners on the corner. A fielder's choice for Bailey Turnbow saw the Pats close the first inning with a 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs mustered their first hit of the game in the top of the second inning, but a crucial strikeout from pitcher Lindsey Shope shut the hopes of the Bulldogs down. The bottom of the second featured a single to left field for Amber Gainer followed by a shot off the top of the left center field fence from Jade Gainer. With a 5-0 lead, a first pitch RBI double from Keatts raises UC to a 6-0 lead heading into the top of the third.
A quick one, two, three inning from Cumberlands sent them back on offense. Turnbow ignites the bottom of the third with a leadoff double to the left center field gap. A sacrifice bunt from Emily Bryant moved Turnbow into scoring position, paired with a double down the left field line from Aniyah White for a 7-0 lead at the end of the third.
The bottom of the fourth saw Cumberlands with a leadoff double from Jade Gainer. A Keatts hit by pitch put runners on the corner, followed by a two RBI Atkins single through the right side to elevate the Pats to 9-0. In the top of the fifth, the Pats saw Kaitlyn Schofield close the door on the Bulldogs to give Cumberlands their 12th run-rule victory of the season.
LEADERS
Leading the way offensively, Jade Gainer was perfect at the plate going 3-3 with three RBIs and three runs. Amber Gainer followed, going 2-3 at the plate with two runs while Keatts was perfect at the plate, going 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs.
Pitcher Shope collected her 10th win of the season after tossing four innings, recording two strikeouts and only allowing three hits.
The Patriots will remain inside the UC Softball Complex for an MSC Series against Georgetown College. Games are set for Friday, March 29th and Saturday, March 30th, with Friday's games slated for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
