Monday Notch Double-Double as Patriots Close as MSC Tournament Runner-Up

Bowling Green, KY – The second-seed and 15th-ranked Patriots women's basketball team had a strong first half, however, a third quarter run proved to be the difference as UC fell to top-seed and third-ranked Campbellsville 74-64 in the championship game of the MSC Tournament Monday night.  The Tigers improve to 27-1 on the year, while the Patriots move to 22-9 overall.

Kassie Monday led the way with 15 points and 10 assists in the game for her second double-double of the season.  Monday also became the third Patriot player to dish out at least 500 assists in their UC career.  Channing Lewis added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Destiny Haworth and Kaylie Monday added ten points apiece.  Lakin Burke grabbed seven rebounds in the game.

Burke opened the game with a block as Kassie Monday connected with Haworth for a jumper before Kaylie Monday found Haworth behind-the-arc to put UC in front 5-2.  Kassie Monday found Haworth and Kaylie Monday for three-pointers to make it 11-10 in favor of Cumberlands.  In the closing minute of the period Kaylie Monday found Kassie Monday cutting towards the hoop for a layup, before Victory Fredricks added a pair of blocks to put Cumberlands in front 16-15.

Both teams traded baskets to open the second quarter until Kassie Monday found Kylie Fultz on the block for a layup as Cumberlands cut the deficit to 23-22.  Fultz added her second bucket a minute later to put UC in front however, Campbellsville went on a 6-2 run to take a 29-26 lead.  On the Patriots final possession of the half, Kassie Monday connected with Lewis for a layup to pull within a point at 29-28.

Lewis hit a pair of free throws, grabbed two rebounds and found Kaylie Monday for a three-pointer to put UC in front 33-32 with 7:47 remaining.  On the next Patriots possession, Kassie Monday drained a three-pointer to extend the lead to 36-33.  Kassie Monday added a pair of layup and found Lewis for a pair from long range to as Cumberlands remained within striking range at 48-46 with 2:35 left.  Campbellsville closed out the quarter with eight unanswered points to take a 56-46 lead.

Kaylie Monday opened the fourth quarter with a steal and transition layup to pull UC within eight.  Cumberlands added layups from Kaylie Monday and Burke to cut the deficit to 61-52 with 6:57 remaining.  The Tigers went on a 9-4 run, before Kassie Monday found Fredricks and Jaiden Cox for buckets before scoring Cumberlands final four points for the 74-64 final. 

The Patriots will now await the NAIA announcement of the tournament field on Thursday, March 7 at 8 p.m. ET.  Cumberlands will host a four-team bracket for the NAIA First and Second Round on March 15 & 16.
