Williamsburg, KY – The #23 Cumberlands women's tennis team concluded the regular season with a top-25 victory, defeating #25 Bethel 4-3 on Friday.
The Patriots opened the day, taking two of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Marina Nagai and
Fan Shiau earned a victory over Cloe Casado and Martina Coghetto 6-2 at #2 doubles, while
Liu YuFang and
Jirachavala Puckaporn defeated Sofia Canto and Marina Zotelli at the #3 spot.
The Wildcats took the first singles match to even the score, but the Patriots responded with a win at the #2 spot to regain the lead.
Nagai captured this victory, continuing her successful day with a solid win in straight sets. The sophomore defeated Sofia Canto 6-3, 6-4.
Bethel took a tightly contested match at the #3 spot to tie the score once again.
The #4 spot also featured a three-set battle. UC's
Blanca Lopez and Bethel's Cloe Casado faced off in three competitive sets, battling to give their respective teams the advantage. Lopez ultimately took the match, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 to give the Pats a 3-2 advantage.
Shiau sealed the deal at the #5 spot to secure the huge conference victory for the Pats. The junior earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Marina Zotelli.
With the win, the Patriots end the regular season with 13-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in conference play. UC's win over the Bethel also secures the #2 seed as the Pats head into the Mid-South Conference tournament next week.
The MSC Tournament is set to take place April 18-21
st in Bowling Green, KY.
