Patriots Utilize Balanced Attack To Advance to AAC Championship Game

Williamsburg, KY – The second-seed Cumberlands women's lacrosse team had seven players tally at least five points in a 26-5 win over third-seed Montreat Friday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, UC improves tom 18-1 overall and advances to the AAC Championship game Saturday.

Morgan Tate netted a career-high six goals and finished with seven points to be tied for the team lead along with Mia Rask.  Anna Lobbezzo added six points and six draw controls, while Morgan Terpstra and Ashlee Baker chipped in six points each.  Marisa Helsten and Aleyah Belton each recorded three goals and two assists in the game.  Koral Hadac scooped seven draw controls and three ground balls, while Belton added five caused turnovers and five draw controls.

Baker netted a man-down goal 19 seconds into the contest to take the 1-0 lead.  Cumberlands forced a pair of failed clears before Tate found Terpstra cutting towards the cage for a goal to make it 2-0 with 12:26 remaining.  UC added three draw controls which they converted into goals to take a 5-0 lead four minutes into the game.  The two teams traded goals before Helsten and Lobbezoo put well-placed shots into the cage extending the lead to 8-1 midway through the first quarter.  UC closed out the quarter with a 3-1 run, including a Peyton Koenig free position goal to take an 11-2 edge.

After both teams added a goal in the first three minutes of the second quarter, Baker connected with Tate for a one-time to make it 13-3.  Hannah Yates added a save before the combination of Rask and Terpstra connected three times to give UC a 16-3 lead at the break.

Baker won the opening draw control of the third quarter and on the Patriots possession Rask found Helsten for a goal.  After a Cavelier goal, UC scored three straight as Belton and Lobbezoo notched a goal and an assists to make it 20-4 with 6:11 remaining. Cumberlands remained in front taking a 21-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mia Bosah made a quartet of saves in the fourth quarter, while the Patriots offense added five goals for the 26-5 final.  Baker dished out three assists, while Lobbezoo and Tate each netted a pair of goals in the period.

Cumberlands returns to the field Saturday, April 20, when they face top-seed Reinhardt in the AAC Championship match.  The rematch of last year's championship game is set for 5 p.m. at the UC Lacrosse Complex.
