#4 Patriots Defeat Cougars in Run Rule Fashion, 12-2

Williamsburg, KY – #4 UC Baseball run-ruled IU Kokomo, 12-2, in their final home game of the regular season, on Tuesday evening at Doyle Buhl Stadium. UC's hitters combined for 13 hits, four of which were home runs, while the pitchers struck out nine batters.

On the mound, Wesley Culley took the start and improved to 4-1 on the season. The junior pitched six full innings and accounted for eight strikeouts, and only allowing one run. Entering in relief, Caleb Plummer, threw two innings and marked one strikeout, along with one run allowed.

Charlie Muñiz batted 2-for-5, with two home runs to tie the Patriot record for home runs in a single season, at 29. Finishing 2-for-4, Alec Gonzalez recorded one three-run homer, and four RBIs. Max Harper went 2-for-3, knocking a home run out of the park, and totaling three RBIs.

UC jumped on the board, 3-0, in the bottom of the first. The two-hole batter, Charlie Muñiz, opened the game with a solo shot to left field. Evan St. Claire followed with a single and went home on a home run by Max Harper.

In the bottom of the third, the Pats added two runs for a 5-0 lead. St. Claire was issued a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and ultimately stole third base. Harper sent him across the plate with an RBI ground out to the shortstop. Johnboy Rittenhouse doubled down the right line to reach base and scored on an Alec Gonzalez RBI double.

Cumberlands put up a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth, 7-0. Caden Petrey was walked, and Muñiz sent him home with his 29th home run of the season.

IU Kokomo scored on a sacrifice fly to put a run on the board, 7-1, in the top of five.

The Patriots tacked on three runs, extending the lead to 10-1, in the bottom of the seventh frame. St. Claire led-off with a single to right field and moved to second when Harper was walked. Rittenhouse reached on a fielder's choice, advancing St. Claire to third. With runners on the corners, Gonzalez launched a long ball over the left center fence.

In the top of the eighth, the Cougars responded with an RBI single to left field, but still trailed 10-2.

UC secured the run rule victory in the bottom of the eighth inning, for a final score of 12-2. The second batter of the frame, Christian Thompson, doubled down the right field line and scored on a single hit by St. Claire. He was advanced to third by Harper, on a single to right center. Rittenhouse enabled the final run to score by hitting an RBI single deep into left field.

The No. 4 Patriots will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee where they will face Johnson University on Wednesday April 24th at 6 p.m.
