Georgetown, KY – The No. 3 Patriots (44-6, 17-1) sweep their fifth Mid-South Conference series, 16-3 and 12-4, over Georgetown (RV) (28-21, 9-9), on Saturday afternoon at Robert N. Wilson Field. Across the two games, UC combined for 25 hits and outscored the Tigers, 28-7. Defensively, the Patriot pitching staff struck out 15 batters.
No. 3 Cumberlands Pounds the Tigers (RV), 16-3
On the mound,
Cesar Avila improved to 10-0 after throwing five strikeouts, while allowing two runs off three hits, across five full innings.
Kailen Hamson threw the final two innings in relief, totaling three strikeouts and four hits allowed.
Evan St. Claire hit 3-for-5 at the plate, recording two doubles and four runners batted in. The designated hitter,
Johnboy Rittenhouse, finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Ben Snapp batted 2-for-4, marking the only homer of the game and two RBIs. Also going 2-for-4,
Trent Prokes earned two RBIs off a sacrifice flyout and an RBI walk.
The Pats were first on the board, plating six runs for a 6-0 lead, in the top of the second.
Max Harper opened the inning with a lead-off single and advanced to second on a single from
Alec Gonzalez. To load the bases,
Ben Snapp was issued a walk. For the first run of the frame,
Trent Prokes was handed an RBI walk. Back-to-back RBI singles from
Caden Petrey and
Christian Thompson sent two runners home. Charlie Muñiz marked a sacrifice fly, and
Evan St. Claire followed with a two RBI double to left center.
The Tigers responded with a two RBI single in the bottom of the third, trimming the deficit to 6-2.
Cumberlands added two runs in the top of the fifth frame, to lead 8-2. A pair of singles by Harper and
Johnboy Rittenhouse put two runners on the bases. Both Patriots advanced on an error by the Tiger's left fielder. Gonzalez enabled Harper to score with a sacrifice fly to left field. Prokes sent another run home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the top of the sixth, UC extended their lead to 10-2. Muñiz singled up the middle and was substituted for pinch runner
Jay Flynn, who scored on a St. Claire double. With a single through the left side, Harper advanced St. Claire to third. Rittenhouse sent the runner home on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Patriots put up a six-spot off six hits, for a final lead of 16-2, in the top of seven. Snapp led off the inning with a solo shot to left field, his fifth homer of the season. The third batter of the inning, Petrey, doubled to center field and plated a run on a single by Thompson. Another single to center field put Muñiz on base, and he was then substituted for pinch runner, Flynn. St. Claire singled through the left side to send Thompson across the plate. Harper was walked to load the bases, and Rittenhouse sent two runners home with a single up the middle. On an RBI fielder's choice to Gonzalez, Harper scored the final run.
No. 3 Cumberlands Completes Sweep of Georgetown (RV), 12-4
Wesley Culley took the start on the mound, throwing one strikeout and allowing two runs in two complete innings. The winning pitcher,
Dustin Sprong (3-2), entered for four innings, collecting two strikeouts and allowing no runs with just one hit.
Jared Shelton closed the game for the Pats, throwing four strikeouts in the final two innings.
At the dish,
Christian Thompson batted 3-for-5, tallying two RBIs and two runs scored.
Alec Gonzalez finished 2-for-5, with one double and two RBIs.
Georgetown scored early in the bottom of the first, with an RBI single and an RBI double, to lead 2-0.
The Pats answered with four runs off four hits, to enter a 4-2 lead, in the top of two. A pair of singles hit by
Alec Gonzalez and
Ben Snapp put two runners on base, and both advanced on a wild pitch. Petrey was walked to load the bases, and was followed by
Clay Shelton who knocked a two-run double down the left line. To send two runs across the plate,
Christian Thompson singled and advanced to second on an error.
After two scoreless innings, Cumberlands tacked on eight runs, extending their lead to 12-2. Thompson recorded a single up the middle and took third on an error that allowed
Seth Benner to reach base. Back-to-back walks issued to Charlie Muniz and Harper loaded the bases, and walked a run in. Gonzalez doubled down the left line, sending Benner and Muñiz across the plate. An error by the Tiger's second baseman allowed two runs to score and enabled Snapp to reach second base.
The Tigers plated a run on a fielder's choice, in the bottom of seven, but still trailed 12-3.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Georgetown sent a runner home on a balk for a final score of 12-4.
The third ranked Patriots will travel to the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, KY from Wednesday May 1
st through Sunday May 5
