Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | UC Sports Information

Patriots Fall in Overtime to Top-Ranked Eagles

Waleksa, GA – Will Rogers connected with Evan Barton for the game tying goal with four seconds left in regulation, however, it wasn't enough as the fifth-ranked Patriots men's lacrosse team fell to top-ranked Reinhardt 14-13 in overtime Saturday night.  Cumberlands moves to 11-3 overall and 5-3 in AAC play.

Nick Kava led the way for UC tying his career-high with six goals, while Rogers tallied two goals to go along with a pair of assists and four ground balls.  Dom Lulow tallied three points, including his 100th career point in the game.  Gabe Schwaiger led the UC defense with four caused turnovers and six ground balls.  Michael Toohey made 10 saves in between the pipes.

UC came out firing, recording three shots in the first two minutes as Maalek Wilson found a cutting Kava for a goal putting the Patriots in front 1-0.  After Reinhardt evened the score, Toohey made a save and in the transition Rogers tallied an unassisted goal to make it 2-1.  That goal was Rogers' 125th career point, making him the fastest Patriots player in program history to reach that milestone.  Later in the period, Lulow scooped a ground ball before finding Kava, who fired a shot into the upper corner of the cage to make it 3-2 Cumberlands with 4:23 left.  A pair of saves from Toohey coupled with a Schwaiger caused turnovers kept UC in front 3-2 after the opening quarter.

The Patriots won the opening faceoff of the second quarter as Chrystian Coleman found Owen Hebenstreit for his first collegiate goal nine seconds into the period. Two minutes later, Dennis Smith found Kava for a man-up goal extending the lead to 5-2 with 12:18 left.  Reinhardt netted three of the next four goals, however, the Patriots kept the pressure on with back-to-back goals from Kava off assists from Carter Barrett and Rogers to take an 8-5 advantage.  Schylar Chapman tallied a caused turnover which led to a Lulow goal before Smith found Kava for the second man-up goal of the quarter as the Patriots took a 10-5 lead into half.

Reinhardt rallied the third quarter outshooting the Pats 18-4 and won all six faceoffs as the Eagles recorded six unanswered goals to take an 11-10 lead into the fourth.

Both teams came out with strong defensive efforts in the fourth quarter as Patriots took advantage of a Reinhardt penalty resulting in a man-up goal from Rogers to make it 11-11 midway through the period.  Toohey added a save a minute later, before Wilson put Cumberlands in front 12-11 with an unassisted goal at the 6:50 mark.  The Eagles scored twice to retake the led, however, in the closing seconds of regulation Coleman scooped a ground ball as Rogers found Barton for the equalizer to force overtime.

In the extra period, Schwaiger forced a turnover and scooped the ground ball as Rogers put a shot on frame, which was saved.  JR Sess netted the game-winning goal with 2:02 remaining in overtime to give Reinhardt the 14-13 win.

The Patriots close out the regular season on Saturday, April 13, when they travel to Athens, TN to face Tennessee Wesleyan. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
