Campbellsville, KY – The No. 4 Patriots (32-5, 8-1) clinched the Mid-South Conference series with an 11-7 win over Campbellsville (16-13, 3-6) in game two of the series, but fell 9-5 in the finale, splitting the twin bill. Across the two games, UC batters totaled 16 hits and the pitching staff struck out 17 Tigers at HIG Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon.
#4 Cumberlands Slides Past Tigers, 11-7
The starting pitcher,
Cesar Avila, improved 7-0 on the season after he threw five strikeouts across five complete innings, while allowing three runs on three hits.
Chipper Korbacher closed the game for the Patriots, collecting two strikeouts in 1.1 innings and his eighth save of the season.
The catcher, Charlie Muñiz, batted 2-for-2 with one long ball, two walks, and two RBIs.
Trent Prokes hit 2-for-3, recording two singles and an RBI walk for a total of three RBIs. Going 1-for-3,
Alec Gonzalez hit a two RBI single and scored two runs.
For a quick start, Charlie Muñiz sent a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the first, putting Cumberlands up 1-0.
The Pats extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second.
Johnboy Rittenhouse was issued a lead-off walk, advanced to third on two wild pitches and ultimately scored on an error by Campbellsville's catcher.
Ben Snapp followed with a single to center field and took second on a wild pitch, while the second walk of the inning was issued to
Alec Gonzalez.
Trent Prokes sent Snapp across the plate with a single to right field and
Christian Thompson loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. On a sacrifice fly by Muñiz, Gonzalez was able to score.
In the top of three,
Max Harper plated one run after putting a single in left field and scoring on a bases-loaded RBI walk to Prokes for a UC lead of 5-0.
Campbellsville responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, to trim the lead to 5-1.
Cumberlands scored six runs off seven hits to lead 11-1, in the top of the fifth frame. Back-to-back singles by
Caden Petrey and
Ben Snapp put two runners on the bags. Gonzalez singled to center field and advanced all the way to third on an error by the Tiger's centerfielder, allowing Petrey and Snapp to cross the plate. A single to left by Prokes sent Gonzalez home, and Prokes scored when Muñiz, who was substituted for pinch runner
Jay Flynn, singled to left center.
Evan St. Claire sent a single to the pitcher and went home with Flynn on a double hit by Rittenhouse.
The Tigers added two in the bottom of the same inning with a two RBI double, but still trailed 11-3.
For a final score of 11-7, Campbellsville plated four runs in the bottom of six.
#4 Cumberlands Fall to Campbellsville, 9-5
Wesley Culley started on the mound and moves to 3-1 after throwing three strikeouts and allowing three runs off six hits across 2.2 innings.
Jake Kmiecik pitched for 1.2 innings and totaled two strikeouts and no runs allowed. For the final two outs,
Jared Shelton entered and allowed no hits or runs.
At the plate,
Evan St. Claire hit 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The shortstop,
Alec Gonzalez, batted 1-for-4 and recorded two RBIs.
The Tigers were first on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second, 2-0.
Adding one run to their lead on an RBI single in the bottom of the third, Campbellsville was ahead 3-0.
To lead 4-0, the Tigers sent an RBI single to the shortstop in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of six, UC trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with three runs off two hits.
Christian Thompson reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a single hit by
Evan St. Claire. To load the bases, Charlie Muñiz was walked. On a groundout to the pitcher,
Max Harper sent Thompson home. The other two base runners scored on an
Alec Gonzalez single to left field.
Campbellsville responded with three runs in the bottom of the same frame and led 7-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Patriots tacked on one more run but trailed 7-5.
Jose Valentin was walked, advanced by Thompson on a single, and both runners went home when St. Claire doubled to right.
The Tigers took their final lead to 9-5 with an RBI double and an RBI single, in the bottom of eight.
No. 4 UC Baseball will face No. 21 Tennessee Wesleyan in their second mid-week matchup of the season on Tuesday April 9
th, at Doyle Buhl Stadium. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
