Lewiston, ID – For the first time in program history, No. 3 Cumberlands (52-7) secured a win in the 2024 Avista NAIA World Series, defeating No. 7 William Carey (37-16), 6-4, in an elimination game at Harris Field on Saturday afternoon. The historic day was highlighted by three broken records from the pitching staff and a grand slam by Charlie Muniz. UC hitters tallied eight across the game, while the pitchers struck out 13 Crusaders.
Cesar Avila walked away as the winning pitcher, moving to 13-0 to break the Cumberlands Baseball single-season wins record. The starter threw 10 strikeouts across seven innings, breaking the program record for single-season strikeouts, totaling 124 on the year. Entering for the eighth inning,
Caleb Plummer tallied one strikeout with no allowed hits or runs.
Chipper Korbacher closed the game on the mound, throwing two strikeouts in the final inning to earn his 12
th save of the season. The closer reached a new program high of 67 career appearances.
At the plate, Charlie Muniz batted 2-for-5 and knocked a crucial grand slam over the left-center wall, reaching 100 RBIs this season.
Max Harper finished 2-for-4 and accounted for the other two runs from two RBI singles.
After three scoreless innings, UC was first on the board, taking a 1-0 lead. The second batter of the inning,
Christian Thompson, was walked and advanced by
Evan St. Claire with a single.
Max Harper sent Thompson around the bases and across the plate with an RBI single to right center.
The Crusaders responded with one run off a solo home run, tying the score at 1-1, in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of five, the Patriots shifted back into the lead, 2-1. To lead of the inning, Charlie Muniz, singled through the left side, and was substituted for pinch runner,
Jay Flynn. St. Claire advanced Flynn to second on a ground out, and Flynn scored when Harper popped a single to left center.
William Carey took a 4-2 advantage in the top of the sixth inning with a three RBI homer.
Cumberlands battled back into the final 6-4 lead, in the bottom of the sixth frame. For two free bases,
Trent Prokes was hit by a pitch and
Caden Petrey was issued a walk.
Christian Thompson loaded the bases after being walked, as well. Muniz brought power to the plate, hitting a grand slam to clear the bases and put UC back in the lead.
The pitching staff defended the lead, surrendering just one hit throughout the last three innings.
No. 3 UC Baseball will face the loser of game seven, either No. 1 Southeastern or No. 9 Arizona Christian, on Monday May 27
th at 8:35 a.m. PDT / 11:35 a.m. EDT.
