No. 3 Cumberlands Displays Disciplined Approaches in Win Over the Lions (RV), 7-2

Bowling Green, KY – The #3 Patriots (46-6, 17-1) collected their second Mid-South Conference Tournament win over Freed-Hardeman (RV) (30-18-1, 10-8), 7-2, on Friday evening at Bowling Green Ballpark. UC hitters tallied eight hits, while the pitching staff struck out 11 batters.

Cesar Avila took the start on the mound, throwing six strikeouts across six innings to secure his 11th win of the season. Cooper Morgan entered in the seventh inning and struck out two batters in two innings. Chipper Korbacher struck out the final three batters in the top of the ninth frame.

At the plate, Alec Gonzalez batted 2-for-5, with one RBI off a solo home run. Charlie Muniz hit 2-for-4, recording one double and an RBI. Christian Thompson finished 2-for-4, with a triple along with three runs scored.

Freed-Hardeman scored early in the top of the first on a two RBI triple to left center, 2-0.

UC answered with one run to trim the deficit to 2-1, in the bottom of the same frame. Lead-off batter, Christian Thompson, opened the game with a triple to center field. Charlie Muniz sent him across the plate on an error by the Lion's shortstop.

After a scoreless inning, Cumberlands shifted into a 3-2 lead, plating two runs off two hits. Thompson singled through the right side and advanced when Muniz, substituted for pinch runner Jay Flynn, was issued a walk. With a single to center field, Evan St. Claire sent Thompson home. Max Harper was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and the next batter, Ben Snapp, was able to walk in a run.

In the bottom of five, the Pats extended the lead to 4-2. Harper started the inning with a single to left and Gonzalez followed with a single up the middle. The bases were loaded when Snapp was walked, and Caden Petrey was issued a walk, to plate one run.

A lead-off solo shot over the right field fence by Gonzalez put Cumberlands up 5-2, in the bottom of the seventh.

The Patriots scored their final two runs I the bottom of the eighth inning, 7-2. Thompson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and took second and third on a wild pitch. After being intentionally walk, St. Claire advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Thompson went home. In the next at-bat, Harper laid down a single, sending St. Claire to third. After Trent Prokes was walked, St. Claire scored on a wild pitch.

No. 3 UC Baseball will continue to play in the winner's bracket of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Saturday May 4th against the winner of the Bethel/Georgetown game, at 5 p.m. CT.
