Michael Toohey amassed a program record 25 saves to lead the fourth-seed Cumberlands to a 16-9 win over fifth-seed William Penn Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. With the win, UC advances to the semifinals for the sixth straight season and improves to 14-4 overall.
Toohey was nearly unstoppable compiling 17 saves over the course of the second and third quarter to break the school record of 21 set last season by
Nathan Foskey. It also marks the second 20+ save performance for the Johns Creek, GA native.
Ben Martin notched four caused turnovers and scooped a team-high five ground balls, while
Gabe Schwaiger added two caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls.
Offensively, UC was led by
Nick Kava, who finished with five goals, while
Maalek Wilson chipped in four goals.
Will Rogers tallied two goals to go along with a pair of assists, as
Dom Lulow dished out three assists in the win.
Toohey made a pair of saves on the Statesmen first possession, before
Evan Barton connected with Rogers for a goal to put UC in front 1-0. The two teams traded possession until the 6:19 mark when Wilson dodged towards the cage and fired a top corner goal to extend the lead to 2-0. A minute later, Martin forced a turnover and on the ensuing transition,
Johnathon Vanover found Barton for a goal putting UC in front 3-0. The two teams traded goals, before Kava put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage making it 5-1 after the opening quarter.
Ty Grooms won the opening faceoff of the second quarter and scored eight seconds into the period to make it a 6-1 advantage. William Penn scored three unanswered goals before Lulow scooped a ground ball and found Kava for a goal to extend the lead to 7-4 with 5:50 left. The two teams traded goals twice, before UC took advantage of a penalty as Kava notched the man-up goal with 36 seconds left as the Patriots took a 9-6 lead into half.
UC came out with a strong defensive effort as Toohey made a pair of saves, while the defense combined for two caused turnovers in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Offensively, UC extended their leas as Lulow connected with Kava for a goal at the 11:46 mark. The Patriots added two of the next three goals, including a man-down goal from Rogers to give UC a 12-7 lead with 3:57 remaining. In the closing minute of the period
Carter Barrett put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage to make it 13-7.
Cumberlands aggressiveness continued into the fourth quarter as a Schwaiger caused turnover lead to Rogers finding Vanover for a goal to make it 14-7. Wilson and
Chrystian Coleman added back-to-back goals while Toohey made a trio of saves for the 16-9 final.
The Patriots advance to the semifinals, where they will take on top-seed Reinhardt. The game is slated for Thursday, May 9, at 3 p.m.
