UC Volleyball Sweeps Midway in Powerful Home Opener

Williamsburg, KY – Cumberlands Volleyball extends their win streak and undefeated record to 9-0, after sweeping Midway (1-1), 3-0, with offensive power on Wednesday evening at the UC Volleyball Gym. The Pats totaled 41 kills, 39 assists, 60 digs, and eight service aces across the three sets.

Allyson Grava led the Patriots in kills, notching 16, while Sara Zampedri tallied 10. Kendall Arnold marked 22 assists and Juliet Banks recorded 18 digs on defense and two service aces.

Sara Zampedri opened the first set with a kill, followed by a Midway attacking error to lead, 2-0. The Patriots scored four consecutive points, 6-1, with back-to-back kills from Grava and one from Zampedri, along with an attacking error on the Eagles. Aleksandra Augustyniak and two Grava kills stretched the UC lead to 16-11. Midway attempted to lessen the gap, but a pair of Eagle errors, and a kill from Augustyniak with an ace served by Zampedri sealed the match at 25-20.

In the second set, Cumberlands capitalized off two kills by Grava, two attacking errors on Midway, and an Augustyniak ace to lead 5-1. The Eagles took a 6-5 advantage, but a kill from the setter, Savanah Jolly, and back-to-back Midway errors put UC back in an 8-6 lead. After exchanging points, the Pats went on a three-point run, with kills by Augustyniak and Jolly, putting Cumberlands up 23-20. The teams battled, but the Patriots took the win with a pair of kills hit by Zampedri, 26-24.

UC brought the power in the third set, reaching an early 5-1 lead off kills from Augustyniak and Kara Gipson, an ace served by Arnold, and two Midway attacking errors. The Pats went on a five-point run to extend their lead to 10-2. On that run, Cumberlands saw a kill and an ace from Zampedri, a Grava kill, and a pair of errors on the Eagles. Augustyniak recorded two kills and Grava notched one, keeping the momentum on UC's side of the court, 15-6. Six consecutive points for a 24-11 lead, with a trio of kills hit by Grava, a Banks service ace, and a kill from Kaylee Cantlin propelled the Patriots to a final kill by Grava, to complete the set at 25-13.

The Patriots look to host the Cumberlands Invite on August 30th and 31st, facing Bluefield at 3:30 p.m. and William Carey at 7:30 p.m. on the first day of competition, in Williamsburg, KY.
