Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands captured 26 podium finishes and recorded a conference record 246 points en route to winning the 2024 Mid-South Conference 3D Archery Championship, Saturday afternoon at the UC All-Purpose Field. The Patriots totaled nine gold medals, 12 silver medals, and five bronze medals on the day.
The Patriots opened the day with a one-two finish in the women's barebow division.
Kennedy Sumpter captured her first 3D championship after carding a 57. The senior achieved three 12's over the six target field to separate herself from the field.
Erin Heyob earned the silver medal after tallying a 49, including hitting a pair of ten's.
Cumberlands recorded a pair of podium finishes in men's barebow division.
Jonathan Morris carded a 60 to edge out the field to finish atop the podium. Morris opened the day with a 12 and hit a 14 during the fifth round to ascend the leaderboard.
Tyler Woosley earned bronze after scoring a 53 on the morning.
Freshman
Brodie Vinson captured the conference title in the men's recurve division. Vinson utilized three 12's in the in the middle rounds to climb the leaderboard before achieving a ten in the sixth round and earn the five point victory.
Robert Gillette finished fourth in this division earning five points towards the team total.
UC posted a clean sweep in the women's fixed pins division after placing first through fourth. Freshman
Hannah Summers led the way with 64 points after she notched a 12 in the sixth round to secure the win.
Hollyann Lewis carded a 60 to finish runner-up for her first individual podium finish.
Cammie Shuman rounded out the podium sweep as she tallied a 60.
Ela Smallacombe placed fourth in the division after carding 58 points.
Colton Caudill utilized consecutive 14's in the final two rounds to force a one-arrow shootoff for first place. Caudill tallied a near perfect shot to clinch the gold medal and finish atop the podium.
Jaden Taylor edged out
Connor Mullis for fourth place after recording a 62.
UC had a pair of podium finishes in both the women's and men's compound division. In women's compound,
Grace Moore hit a 14 in the sixth round to earn a runner-up finish, while
Claire Garrison tallied 64 points to earn bronze. The third place finish was Garrison's first individual podium finish as a Patriot.
In men's compound it was
Blaine Kostrzewski who earned a silver medal after carding a 76. Kostrzewski hit a 14 in the sixth round to force a shoot-off, where her earned the runner-up finish.
Tanner Barker hit back-to-back 14's to close out the day and place third.
Ceridwyn Salyers notched a third place finish in the women's recurve division. Salyers, who was the top qualifier during regionals, carded a 56 to earn bronze.
Brianna Laux just missed the podium after tallying a 54.
Cumberlands carried that momentum into team rounds where they posted either a first or second place finish in all 12 divisions.
In the mixed barebow division, the duo of Woosley and Sumpter scored over 100+ points in each of their two matches to cruise to a gold medal. The duo notched a 108-78 win over Campbellsville in the gold medal match.
Woosley teamed up with Morris and
Isaac Ivey to capture gold in the men's barebow division. The trio opened with a 150-93 over Lindsey Wilson before defeating Campbellsville 142-133.
Cumberlands also captured gold in the women's fixed pins division. The trio of Lewis, Summers, and
Ela Smallacombe earned the top-seed and posted a 177-161 over Pikeville. In the championship match, UC defeated Lindsey Wilson 180-169 to finish atop the podium.
The Patriots final gold medal came in the mixed fixed pins division as Caudill and Lewis teamed up for a 2-0 record. The duo opened with a 118-99 win over Campbellsville before edging out Lindsey Wilson 126-124 in the gold medal match.
UC earned silver medals in both the men's and women's recurve team division. The men's team of Vinson, Gillette, and
Kevin Wilkerson defeated Pikeville 171-167 to advance to the finals, while the women's trio of
Ceridwyn Salyers,
Brianna Laux, and
Lidia Quezada posted a 172-114 win in the semifinals.
The Patriots also earned silver four other team divisions, including the women's barebow team, both men's and women's compound division, the men's fixed pins team. Women's barebow of Sumpter, Heyob, and
Lauren Oosterbaan went 1-1 on the day, while Barker, Kostrewski, and
Isaac Sullivan earned silver in the men's compound. The trio of Harding, Garrison, and Moore finished runner-up in women's compound, while Caudill, Taylor, and Mullis finished second in men's fixed pins.
In the men's mixed compound division, Barker and Harding advanced to the gold medal match, before falling in a one-arrow shootoff to come away with silver.
Lindsey Wilson finished second overall with 132 points, while Pikeville was third with 103 points.
Cumberlands now turns their attention to the USA 3D National Championship, October 3-5 in Foley, AL.
