Williamsburg, KY – UC Volleyball (RV) (21-3, 2-2) returned to their home court and notched their thirteenth sweep of the season over Mid-South Conference opponent, the Cumberland Phoenix (15-10, 2-2), 3-0, on Thursday evening. The Patriots compiled 39 kills, 49 digs, six aces, and six blocks across the three sets.
Sara Zampedri paved the way for Cumberlands, tallying 17 kills and 10 digs while
Allyson Grava marked 11 kills. On defense,
Juliet Banks tallied 18 digs and
Aleksandra Augustyniak and
Kara Gipson collected four blocks.
Kendall Arnold led in assists, earning 15.
The first set opened with a 2-0 lead in favor of the Pats, seeing kills from Grava and Zampedri. The Phoenix tied the score at 2-2, but UC pulled forward with a kill and an ace by Zampedri and two service errors, 6-4. After Cumberland shifted into the lead, a Grava kill and an ace served by Arnold in addition to two errors on the Phoenix allowed the Patriots to take back a 10-9 lead. The Patriots capitalized on three consecutive Cumberland errors for an advantage of 14-11 and moved further ahead to 16-12 on more Phoenix errors. Zampedri tallied a pair of kills while Augustyniak served an ace and Grava notched a kill to put UC up 20-18. Grava sealed the set at 25-20 with a kill.
The Patriots started the second set down 3-0, until back-to-back kills from Augustyniak trimmed the deficit to 3-2. After the Phoenix shifted in front, 7-4, three points off two CU errors and a kill by Arnold leveled the set at 7-7. A pair of kills by Grava and one kill from Gipson helped Cumberlands pull ahead 15-10. Three consecutive errors on Cumberland, a service ace by
Savanah Jolly, and a final kill by Zampedri finished the set at 25-17.
The third set saw a 4-3 Patriot lead off three CU errors and a kill by Zampedri. The Phoenix led 11-9 until four Cumberlands points off a trio of Zampedri kills and an attacking error on CU shifted the Pats into a 13-11 advantage. To lead 17-14, Zampedri tallied three kills while
Faith Franklin notched one kill. To complete the final set at 25-19, Grava notched a pair of kills in addition to a kill by Arnold.
The Patriots will face Defiance College in Lima, OH on Saturday September 28
th at 5 p.m.
