No. 4 UC Men’s Wrestling Finishes 9th at NWCA National Duals

Cedar Falls, IA – The Patriots Men's Wrestling Team finished ninth at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, IA. On day two of the duals, UC won both of their matches with #7 Chandlar Akins, #8 Ty Lehman, and #7 Thomas Ketchen-Carter recording 2-0 records. The Pats went 3-2 over the course of both days and now have a dual record of 7-2 on the season.  

#4 Cumberlands Rolls Past #9 Southern Oregon, 28-10 

In a top 10 matchup, UC came away victorious against the Raiders after posting a 7-3 record in the dual. The first win of the day came from #7 Chandlar Akins over #11 Dylan Clark (Southern Oregon) with a 5-0 decision in the 133-bout. The graduate student beat his opponent with a 3-point takedown, an escape, and riding time. The Pats kept it rolling with back-to-back falls from #8 Gage Hudson (3:28) and #8 Ty Lehman (4:30) over #19 Simon Graeber (Southern Oregon) and Travis Thorpe (Southern Oregon), respectively. In the 165-bout, #7 O'Brian Black battled for a 13-7 sudden death victory over #19 Dylan Straley (Southern Oregon). Black recorded three 3-point takedowns, a 3-point nearfall, and an escape in the match. #9 Dylan Preston followed with a win against Josiah Green (Southern Oregon) by major decision, 12-4. The senior tallied two 3-point takedowns in the first, two escapes in the second, and a 4-point nearfall in the third period. #7 Thomas Ketchen-Carter notched an escape, a 3-point takedown, and riding time to defeat #21 Adrian Chavez-Morales (Southern Oregon) in a 5-1 decision in the 184-weight class. In the 285-bout, Wylie Dunn took his match over Sebatian Echeverria (Southern Oregon) in a 4-1 sudden death victory and scored the last three points for UC. The junior recorded an escape in the third period and a 3-point takedown in overtime to win the match.  

#4 Cumberlands Holds on to Beat #8 Indiana Tech, 21-15 

In their final match of the Duals, UC was able to hold on and beat Indiana Tech with a 6-4 mark. 133 wrestler #7 Akins scored the first points for UC in this one with a 4-1 decision win over #8 Luke Rioux (Indiana Tech), recording an escape and a 3-point takedown. In the 141-bout, Eli Peyton gave the Patriots the lead after defeating #18 Conner Kimbrough (Indiana Tech) in a 7-5 decision. The junior tallied two 3-point takedowns and an escape in the match. #8 Lehman was able to extend the UC lead by notching a fall of 4:47 over Chase Pluhar (Indiana Tech). Weston Melvin competed in the 165-bout and fought for a hard-fought 5-3 decision victory over #7 Vinnie Abbey (Indiana Tech) with a 3-point takedown and two escapes. Tallying two 3-point takedowns, an escape, and riding time, #22 Sherman Dixon beat Landon Buchanan (Indiana Tech) in the 174-weight class in an 8-2 decision. #7 Ketchen-Carter scored the final three points for the Pats with a 7-2 decision over Blaine Kubasta (Indiana Tech), scoring on two 3-point takedowns and an escape.  

UC Men's Wrestling will host their first home dual next Friday, January 17th against (RV) Midway. The dual will begin at 7 p.m. in the UC Volleyball Gym.
