Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots took on the top-ranked Georgetown College in the O. Wayne Rollins Center on Thursday and came up short 93-85, falling to 15-5 on the year and 3-1 in MSC play. GC outscored UC 56-34 in the paint and forced the Patriots to turn the ball over 17 times, which tied the most turnovers for the Pats this season.
Anthony Johnson led all scorers with 28 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals while Harry Morrice added 14 pts, 6 reb, and a pair of blocks. Matthew Cromer finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists followed by DJ Jones who scored 10 points with four assists and three boards.
Johnson started the night with a pair of free throws followed by a tip-in from Morrice. GC then took a two-point lead before Morrice found Cromer for three to put the Pats back on top. The following possession, a Jones steal led to a fast break that saw Johnson take flight and finish with a huge slam for a three-point lead, UC's largest of the night. Georgetown regained the lead before another layup from Morrice evened things up. Anthony Harris got in on the action with a slam to keep the lead for Cumberlands.
GC responded with an 8-1 run that put them up five. A Tajahri Cave free throw and a pair of Jones triples halted the run and brought UC back within one. After a Tiger FT, Johnson knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to make it 22-22 with 8:33 remaining. Georgetown then scored 11 points in a row to take their first double-digit lead of the game, forcing a Patriot timeout. A Cave layup halted the run for a moment, followed by a Cromer three and Harris lay in. Two more buckets from Cromer and Cave pulled UC within four with less than three minutes left. After a Tiger basket, Johnson nailed a three to shift some momentum in UC's favor. Johnson then found Morrice in the lane for a dunk to push UC within three. The Tigers would score the final bucket of the half with 47 seconds left, taking a 43-38 lead into the break.
After two Robertas Jonaitis free throws kept the deficit at five, the Tigers answered right back increasing the lead back to eight. Another Johnson fast break lay in cut it back to six prior to five more GC points to put them up 53-42. A triple from Johnson followed by an impressive and-one got the crown on their feet and made it a two-possession game. After another GC basket, Johnson was fouled on a three and connected on all three foul shots to make it 55-51 with 14:54 to play.
This would be the closest that Cumberlands would get as Georgetown would reclaim an 11-point lead. UC pulled to within nine multiple times over the next 10 minutes of action but could not get any closer until under a minute to play as a Johnson three made it 93-85. This would account for the final bucket of the game as the top-ranked Tigers took the victory and handed UC their first MSC loss of the season.
Cumberlands will look to bounce back in two days in Lebanon, TN as they take on the Phoenix of Cumberland University. Tip-off is set for 4 PM ET / 3 PM CT.
