Williamsburg, KY – The sixth-ranked University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team continued its strong Mid-South Conference form Monday night, earning a 1-0 victory over Campbellsville University at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. The win pushes the Patriots to 7-3-4 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.
Cumberlands came out on the front foot early, controlling possession and creating multiple chances in the opening half. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute, when freshman Leandro Nico Romero Protto netted his first collegiate goal in spectacular fashion — converting a bicycle kick off a cross from Mario Fernandez Garcia, with Carles Diez Herrero earning the secondary assist. The goal capped a strong stretch of attacking play that saw UC fire six first-half shots and earn three corners while holding the Tigers without a single attempt.
The Patriots continued to dictate the tempo in the second half, generating several quality looks including headers from Ryota Nakamura and Bruno Garcia, but Campbellsville's keeper stood tall to keep the deficit at one. Defensively, Cumberlands remained organized and composed, allowing just one shot on goal all night as goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo secured his eighth clean sheet of the season.
UC outshot Campbellsville 11-1, including 5-1 in shots on goal, while holding a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
With the win, #6 Cumberlands improves to 7-3-4 and remains unbeaten in conference play. The Patriots will close out their home slate on Monday, October 20, hosting Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) for Senior Night at 7 p.m. at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
