Patriots Advance to MSC Semifinals Behind Balanced Scoring Attack

Williamsburg, KY – The #10 and third-seed Patriots had a pair of players net their first collegiate goal, while Ines Martin Garcia De La Torre netted a brace as Cumberlands earned the 6-0 win over sixth-seed Georgetown Wednesday night at the UC Soccer Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 12-3-3 on the year and advances to the semifinals of the MSC Tournament.

Martin Garcia De La Torre recorded her first multi-goal game of her career in the win.  Karla Waibel and Lucia Domingo Porcel both netted their first collegiate goal, while Nicole Araujo scored in back-to-back matches.  Tori Robertson closed out the scoring, while Carola Fontan, Noah Paalman, Madison Long, and Waibel each notched an assist.

UC took control of the possession from the opening whistle as Sara Soto put a shot on frame in the 7'.  Two minutes later, the Patriots worked the ball from the backline as Waibel sent a cross up field, where Araujo put it home, giving Cumberlands the 1-0 lead.  It was Waibel's first career assist.  A few minutes later, the Patriots took advantage of a Tigers foul as Domingo Porcel went nearside with the free kick, making it a 2-0 advantage.  The Patriots notched two shots and a corner kick over the next ten minutes of play.  UC continued to push the ball up field as Waibel sent the ball into the box, where it bounced twice before sliding into the corner of the goal extending the lead to 3-0 in the 28'.  Later in the half, Long sent a cross into the box, where Martin Garcia De La Torre headed it just inside the far post giving Cumberlands the 4-0 lead at the break.

The Patriots continued to control the possession tallying four shots and a pair of corner kicks in the first ten minutes of the second half.  The score remained 4-0 until the 70' when Noah Paalman brought the ball up the left flank before crossing it into the box, where Robertson was there to finish.  It was her fourth goal against Georgetown this season.  The final goal came in the 87' as Carola Fontan sent a corner kick towards the back post, as Martin Garcia De La Torre finished for the 6-0 final.  The assist was Fontan's 34th of her career moving her into second place all-time in program history.

Morgan White, Ella Gilliam, and Claire Fogarty combined for UC's 11th clean sheet of the season and their fourth straight.  The trio along with the Patriots backline limited Georgetown to just one shot in the match.

Cumberlands advances to the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Tournament, where they will face the winner of #2 Lindsey Wilson vs. #7 Freed-Hardeman next week.  Stay tuned to www.cumberlandspatriots.com for more information about date & times.
