Cumberlands Close Out as MSC Tournament Runner-Up

Williamsburg, KY – The third-seed Cumberlands women's soccer team rallied late but it wasn't enough as they fell 2-1 in overtime to fourth-seed Campbellsville in the finals of the MSC Tournament Championship, Tuesday night at the UC Soccer Complex.  The Patriots will head into the national tournament with a 13-4-3 record.

UC outshot the Tigers 18-5 in the match and held 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.  Carola Fontan netted her fifth goal of the season, while Morgan White made a pair of saves.

The Patriots earned a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes of action, however, were turned away by the Tigers defense keeping the match scoreless.  Campbellsville struck in the 8' scoring off a rebound shot that deflected off the crossbar to take a 1-0 lead.  The Patriots looked for a quick response as Alba Ramirez put a shot on frame, which was saved.  Cumberlands controlled the possession through majority of the first half but was unable to break through as the Tigers took the 1-0 lead into the break.

UC came storming out in the second half as Nicole Araujo put a shot on frame in the 46' minute, which was deflected out of play.  Both goalies made saves over the next ten minutes of play keeping the score 1-0.  In the 73', Karla Waibel fired a shot from 20 yards out that curved just wide of the net.  The Patriots continued to keep the Tigers backline on its heels throughout the second half.  Late in regulation, Campbellsville was whistled for a handball in the box, setting up a Patriots penalty kick.  Fontan stepped up and planted a shot into the back of the net tying the game 1-1 with 2:37 remaining.  Araujo looked for the game-winner in the closing seconds of the half but the shot was off the mark sending the match to overtime.

Cumberlands continued the possession early into overtime, however, Campbellsville utilized a counter attack as Fiona Jolly netted the game winning goal in the 83' for the 2-1 final.

The Patriots will now await the NAIA Selection Show on Friday, November 14th, at 6 p.m.  when the national tournament field is announced.
