#19 Patriots Utilize Stifling Defense in Road Victory

Saint Mary of the Woods, IN – The #19 Cumberlands women's basketball limited the Pomeroy to five points in both the first and third quarters as the Patriots earned the 72-36 win over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Saturday afternoon at the Knoerle Center.  With the win, UC improves to 8-1 on the season.

Jaydyn Carrico led the way with 16 points, while Lakin Burke and Joy Kendrick each tallied a double-double.  Burke finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds as Kendrick notched 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Aden Clark added 12 points and five assists, while Darcie Anderson added seven assists.

Kendrick dished out assists to Clark and Anderson to put UC in front 4-2.  Cumberlands went on a 13-point run, including seven points from Burke to extend their lead to 17-4 with 2:34 remaining. Just over a minute later Clark found Burke on the post as UC took a 19-5 advantage.

Peyton Mounce connected with Carrico and Zaram Fredricks for consecutive baskets extending the lead to 24-17.  The Pomeroys cut the lead to the 26-15, before Mounce hit a jumper.  In the closing seconds of the quarter Kendrick drained a three-pointer as Cumberlands took a 31-21 lead at halftime.

Clark tallied a rebound and transitioned into a layup a minute into the third quarter.  Mackenzie Babb scored five straight points on back-to-back possession making it a 38-23 advantage with 7:36 remaining.  The two teams traded baskets before Kendrick and Clark added back-to-back buckets to make it a 44-24 leads.  Cumberlands closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run capped off with a Kendrick three-pointer giving UC a 53-26 lead.

On the opening possession of the fourth quarter Anderson connected with Babb for a jumper.  Carrico notched eight straight Patriots points to make it 65-30 with 3:57 remaining.  The freshman added a three-pointer before connecting with Alexia Wilson as the Patriots earned the 72-36 final.

UC returns to the court Tuesday, November 25, when they host IU Southeast.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
