Williamsburg, KY – The top-seeded University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team saw its Mid-South Conference Tournament run come to an end Thursday evening, falling 2–0 to fourth-seeded Cumberland (TN) in the semifinal round at the UC Soccer Complex.
Cumberland (TN) broke through in the 20th minute when Philipp Schmidtke converted off an assist from Harold Perea to give the Phoenix a 1–0 lead. Despite consistent offensive pressure and multiple first-half corner kicks, the Patriots were unable to find the equalizer before the break.
In the second half, the Phoenix doubled their advantage in the 69th minute as Perea finished a pass from Miquel Gelabert to make it 2–0. Cumberlands pushed forward in search of a goal, outshooting Cumberland 12–8 overall and holding a 5–3 edge in corner kicks, but couldn't capitalize on their chances.
Goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo made four saves in the match, while Bruno Marques and Mario Fernandez Garcia each generated multiple scoring opportunities for the Patriots.
With the loss, Cumberlands concludes its MSC Tournament run and now awaits potential selection to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
