#25 Patriots Pull Away in the Second Half to Close out Patriot Classic

Williamsburg, KY – The #25 Cumbelands women's basketball team had eight players score at least seven points and utilized a 24-point third quarter to pull away and earn the 93-36 win over Goshen Friday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court.  With the win, UC improves to 5-0 on the season.

Leading the way for the Patriots is Joy Kendrick, who tallied 14 points and three rebounds.  Peyton Mounce added 12 points and five boards, while Lakin Burke and Amy Thompson notched 11 points apiece.  Zaram Fredricks notched a team-high 10 rebounds, while Darcie Anderson tallied seven points, seven assists, and five steals.

The Patriots took the opening possession as a Kendrick found Burke for a layup.  Two minutes later, Darcie Anderson completed a three-point play to put UC in front 5-4.  The two teams traded baskets before an Anderson steal led to a Kendrick three pointer to make it 12-6 midway through the quarter. After Peyton Mounce sank a pair from long range, Noel Smith made a hard drive and layup extending the Patriots lead to 23-9 after the first quarter.

Both teams traded baskets to open the second quarter before Clark connected with Smith for layup and added a three-pointer to make it 32-12 with 7:58 remaining.  Cumberlands utilized a six-point run, with four points from Burke to extend the lead to 40-14 midway through the quarter.  Amy Thompson drained a three-pointer, while Mackenzie Babb converted a three-point play in the closing seconds of the half as Cumberlands took a 50-25 lead into the break.

Thompson opened the third quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to kick start a 10-2 run.  A few minutes later, Fredrick notched back-to-back layups making it a 67-32 advantage.  The Patriots added a three-pointer from Kendrick and closed out the quarter with Thompson sinking a putback giving UC a 74-34 lead.  Kendrick notched a pair of three-pointers to open the fourth quarter.  Cumberlands notched a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter and outscored Goshen 19-2 in the period for the 93-36 final.

Cumberlands held a 47-25 rebounding advantage and notched 22 assists and 16 steals in the contest.

The Patriots will hit the road next week as they travel to face Alice Lloyd on Tuesday, November 11.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
