ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — In a dramatic NAIA Tournament Round of 16 matchup on Monday evening, the 12th seed Cumberlands Patriots battled to a 2-2 draw through 110 minutes before advancing past Life University 5-4 in penalty kicks at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. UC used an early breakthrough, a timely first-half equalizer, and a flawless shootout to punch its ticket to the national quarterfinals for the second straight season.
Life pushed the tempo early, generating three shots in the opening 11 minutes, testing the Patriots' back line with two dangerous looks, including a driven effort that senior goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo smothered in the ninth minute. That stop steadied UC defensively as the Patriots gradually grew into the match. The Patriots broke through in the 21st minute when Tjerk Meijs barried it in the back of the net, finishing off an assist from Mario Fernandez to put UC ahead 1-0.
Life responded with a two-goal surge moments later. In the 27th minute, the Eagles punched in the equalizer and less than two minutes later tucked home another to swing the lead to 2-1 in their favor.
After Life briefly pulled ahead, Cumberlands responded quickly, forcing an own goal in the 32nd minute to level the match at 2-2. The Patriots carried that momentum into halftime, backed by steady midfield work from Emil Skursch and Abdulah Adams.
The second half saw limited chances for either side, with Fernandez generating the best looks for Cumberlands, including a pair of shots just wide and multiple corners created from persistent attacking runs down the left flank. Defensively, the UC back line held firm, limiting Life to just three shots on goal across 90 minutes.
Neither side broke through in overtime, though UC controlled long spells of possession in the second extra period. Key defensive interventions from Adams and Skursch, along with clean handling from Izquierdo, pushed the matchup to penalty kicks.
Once there, the Patriots were perfect.
UC went a 5-for-5 in the shootout behind conversions from Leandro Nico Romero Protto, Emil Skursch, Adrian Choco, Ryota Nakamura, and Gabriel Canineu. Izquierdo came up with the decisive stop on Life's fifth attempt, diving to deny Alvaro Hidalgo, giving the Patriots a 5-4 edge and securing their place in the NAIA quarterfinals.
With the win, Cumberlands advance to the NAIA Quarterfinals and continue their postseason run in Orange Beach.
