Lebanon, TN – #3 UC Men's Wrestling competed in the Cumberland Open in Lebanon, TN on Saturday. Cumberlands finished with two individual champions in Wylie Dunn and TJ Huber, as well as five others placing in the tournament.
Wylie Dunn finished as the champion in the 285-weight class with a 4-0 record on the day. He opened with a bye before notching a fall against Diego Pelletier (Thomas More) in 3:40. Dunn kept that momentum going with another fall, this time over Maximiliano Taboada (St. Thomas) in 5:18 to move into the semifinals. In the semifinal match, he went on to face Blake Palmer (Huntingdon) where he notched his third consecutive fall in 4:20. In the championship, the junior scored on a 3-point takedown, a 2-point reversal, and an escape before pinning his opponent Ralph Riche (St. Thomas) in a time of 5:05, marking his fourth fall of the tournament.
At 184, TJ Huber earned the title of champion after posting a 3-0 mark. His day began with a bye before winning his first match of the day against Josef Pociask (King) in a 7-5 decision. In the semifinals, the graduate student took a strong 11-0 major decision over Cale Johnson (Lindsey Wilson), tallying three 3-point takedowns, an escape, and riding time. In the championship match, Huber went on to face Jahmare Anthony (unattached) and put together a dominate 21-4 technical victory, highlighted by seven 3-point takedowns.
Coming in second place in the 149-bout was #18 Ty Lehman. Lehman got off to a hot start, pinning opponents Hayden Cannady (Pikeville) and Seth Deperro (Huntingdon) with times of 1:02 and 3:53 to move into the semifinals. In that match, he faced teammate Nathan Marquez (unattached) where he scored on a 3-point takedown and 4-point nearfall in the first, and an escape in third to win by decision, 8-2. Lehman fell in the championship match to Brennan Watkins (King) in a hard-fought 4-2 decision.
In the 197-weight class, Greyson Stevens also put together a second place finish with a 2-1 record. Stevens earned a bye in the first round before facing David Bertrand (King). Stevens collected a 3-point takedown and two esacapes in the match to win in a 5-2 decision. He went on to face Brock Johnson (Huntingdon) in the semifinals and won by major decision, 11-0. The senior recorded three 3-point takedowns, an escape, and riding time. In the championship match, Stevens fell to Cory Cannan (unattached) in a narrow 5-4 decision.
Sherman Dixon took third place in the 174-bout with a 4-1 record. He started with a bye and then recorded a 17-0 technical fall over Ian Gallub (University of Alabama) with two 3-point takedowns, two 4-point nearfalls, a 2-point nearfall, and an escape. The senior went on to take down Eason Martin (unattached) by a fall of 4:21. Dixon fell in the semifinal match to Clinton Morrisette (King), sending him to the consolation bracket. Dixon was able to bounce back with a fall of 1:24 over Jamar Morris (King), his second of the day. In the third place match, Dixon would get a win over teammate Michael Bone (Cumberlands) due to forfeit.
In the 149-weight class, Ben Tarrago took fourth place. Following a bye in the first round, Tarrgo defeated Clay Queen Jr. (unattached) in a 12-7 decision with a 4-point nearfall and reversal in the first, followed by a 3-point takedown in the second, and a reversal and riding time in the third. Tarrago would then fall in his next match to Brennan Watkins (King) by fall. The junior rebounded with a dominate 18-0 technical fall victory over Hashim Wordlaw (unattached). In the third place match, Tarrago fell to teammate Nathan Marquez (unattached).
Rounding out the top finishers for UC is Michael Bone in the 174-bout who ended the day fourth. Bone began with a bye through the first round, followed by a convincing 15-0 technical fall win over Jabare Holmes (Huntingdon). The junior tallied three 3-point takedowns, a 4-point nearfall, an escape, and a penalty. Bone continued that success by pinning his next opponent Sam Van Dyck (University of Alabama) in 0:48. He then went on to face David Burgess (Huntingdon) where he fell in a 9-3 decision. Bone marked his third win of the day with a fall of 6:11 against Ryan Turney (West Virgina Tech) before forfeiting his match against teammate Sherman Dixon (Cumberlands).
