McKenzie, TN – The sixth-ranked Cumberlands women's basketball team mounted a second half rally but it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell to #14 Bethel 81-63 Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Patriots have captured a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season title, their first since the 2011-12 season, after compiling a 24-4 record, including a 10-2 mark in conference play.
Kassie Monday led the way for the Patriots with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while
Lakin Burke chipped in 13 points and six rebounds.
Joy Kendrick tallied 12 points and four rebounds as
Jaiden Cox finished with eight points.
UC struggled to get into a rhythm in the first quarter shooting 7.7% from the field as they fell behind 23-3. The Patriots looked to mount a comeback as
Anaia Hoard converted a layup coupled with a pair of free throws from Burke made it 23-7. The Wildcats extended their lead to 22 points, however, a pair of three-pointers from Kendrick made it 33-15 midway through the second quarter. The two teams traded baskets as Bethel took a 42-20 lead into half.
Kassie Monday opened the third quarter with a jumper. UC utilized a 6-0 run, that included a jumper from
LeeAnna McNulty to cut the deficit to 46-28. Two minutes later, Burke made a layup which sparked an 7-0 run pull UC within 14 points at 49-35. Beth closed out the quarter on a 9-5 run to extend their lead to 58-40.
After the Wildcats pushed their lead to 20 points, Hoard connected with Burke for a layup before draining a three-pointer as part of a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 62-49 two minutes into the fourth quarter.
Kassie Monday netted five straight points to pull the Patriots within 10 at 64-54 with 6:02 remaining. That was the closest UC came as Bethel pulled away for the 81-63 final.
The Patriots have earned the top-seed in the MSC Tournament and have earned a bye into the semifinals. They will face the winner of the 4-5 game on Monday, March 3
rd at 1 p.m.
