Athens, GA – The No. 5 Patriots hit the road to Athens, Tennessee to play top-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon at Athens Insurance Stadium. Cumberlands fell 12-10 despite outhitting the Bulldogs 13-11. The pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts and 11 hits allowed.
Kailen Hamson made the start on the mound for UC and pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
Nolan Wilson came on in relief and was credited with the loss. Wilson allowed three runs on two hits in one inning of relief.
Derick Andiarena had a big day at the plate for UC, batting 3-for-5 with a homerun, double, and five RBI.
Max Harper finished the day 2-for-4 with a three-run HR and three runs scored.
Christian Thompson also tallied multiple hits including a homerun and two RBI.
Thompson wasted no time making his presence known in this one. The left fielder hit a leadoff home run to give UC the early 1-0 lead, his first of the season. After two outs were recorded,
Max Harper walked and
Pedro Vasquez was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Next at-bat,
Derick Andiarena hit an RBI single to center field to score Harper and increase the lead to 2-0.
The Pats added five runs in the top of the second inning.
Edwin Martinez and
Caden Petrey led off the inning with singles, followed by another single from Thompson to score the first run of the inning. Two batters later, Haper hit a three-run shot over the center field fence to make the score 6-0, his second in as many games. Cumberlands was not finished as Andiarena continued his hot start at the plate with an RBI double to right field, extending the lead to 7-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs responded with a seven spot to tie the game at 7-7.
Tennessee Wesleyan added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the game at 10-7. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead 11-7.
Cumberlands had a chance to reduce the deficit in the top of seventh after loading the bases with nobody out but were unable to take advantage.
In the bottom of the frame, Tennessee Wesleyan scored again to make it a 12-7 ballgame.
UC did not go down without fight as Harper and Vasquez reached to lead things off in the top of the ninth. Andiarena gave UC a glimpse of hope with a three-run homerun to cut the deficit to 12-10 with nobody out, his first as a Patriot. However, the Bulldogs would retire the next three batters to secure the win and snap the Pats seven-game winning streak.
Cumberlands will return home to take on Lindsey Wilson tomorrow at Doyle Buhl Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET.
