Williamsburg, KY – The #21 Patriots Women's Tennis team earned a 5-2 win over (RV) Pikeville on Monday afternoon at the UC Tennis Complex. With this win, Cumberlands extends their winning streak to four and improves to 6-2 overall on the season.
Cumberlands took the early 1-0 lead, collecting victories in the first two doubles matches to secure the point. Mahiro Hara partnered with Liu YuFang at #1 doubles, defeating Azul Barrios and Yazmin Barrios, 6-1. Karen Kondo and Victoria Zarate also marked a 6-1 win over Gabriela Guacanes and Belen Cavallero at the #2 spot.
UC came out firing in singles play, leading off with Karen Kondo. Kondo defeated Lilia Jerry 6-3, 7-5 at #1 singles to give the Pats a 2-0 lead.
Marina Nagai earned the next singles victory to increase the lead to 3-0. The junior was dominant, emerging victorious in straight-sets over Gabriela Guacanes, 6-0, 6-0.
In #3 singles, Mahiro Hara took her match against Yazmin Barrios with set wins of 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the overall team win for UC.
Freshman Victoria Zarate tacked on her second point of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set win over Belen Cavallero at #4 singles, giving UC their fifth team point.
Pikeville won the final two matches at the #5 and #6 spots to complete the match at 5-2.
Cumberlands will return to the UC Tennis Complex tomorrow as they host Oakland City at 1 p.m. ET.
