Williamsburg, KY - The No. 21 Cumberlands Women's Tennis team earned their fifth win in a row on Tuesday, defeating Oakland City 6-1 at the UC Tennis Complex.
The Pats opened the day strong, taking two of the three matches in doubles play to grab an early 1-0 advantage. After Oakland City won the first match of the day at #1 doubles, Karen Kondo and Victoria Zarate earned the first win of the day for UC over Isabela Todorovic and Tiana Sparks at the #2 spot, 6-3. Marina Nagai partnered with Rion Yanuma at #3 doubles, defeating Maja Schmitt and Melissa de Jong by a narrow 7-5 score to secure the point.
Cumberlands took control of the match in singles play. Karen Kondo got things started with a straight set victory over Maria Trembach 6-2, 6-1 at #1 singles to put UC up 2-0.
Marina Nagai earned the next victory, with a strong 6-2, 6-1 win over Tiana Sparks at #2 singles, giving UC a 3-0 lead.
Mahiro Hara sealed the deal to put UC ahead 4-0 and secure the overall team victory. The freshman earned a hard-fought 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Cristina Hurtado at #3 singles.
UC finished the day with a pair of wins to cement the 6-1 victory. Victoria Zarate picked up her second point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Melissa de Jong at #4 singles, while Liu Yufang defeated Isabela Todorovic 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 at the #5 spot.
The Pats are back in action again tomorrow, hosting #14 St. Thomas (Fla.) at the UC Tennis Complex.
