Williamsburg, KY – The #19 UC Women's Tennis team hosted #14 St. Thomas at the UC Tennis complex on Wednesday. Cumberlands fell 4-3 in a hard-fought match to end their five-match winning streak.
UC grabbed the early 1-0 advantage after taking two of three matches in doubles play. After St. Thomas won in #1 doubles, Karen Kondo and Victoria Zarate defeated Lauren Seemann and Sofia Nardone 6-1 in the #2 spot. In #3 doubles, Marina Nagai partnered with Rion Yanuma to defeat Lauren Fullerton and Jenesie Burgos 6-4 to secure the doubles point.
Cumberlands continued that momentum into singles play, extending their lead to 2-0 courtesy of Karen Kondo. The senior went up against Lauren Seemann at #1 singles and emerged victorious with identical 6-3 wins, collecting her second point of the match.
Marina Nagai also picked up her second point of the day with a win at #2 singles. Nagai scored 6-0, 6-1 in her win over Caterina Antonini to give the Pats a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots were unable to secure the final point as St. Thomas responded in a big way, taking the next four singles matches in straight-sets to complete the 4-3 comeback.
UC will return to the courts Friday March 14th to take on (RV) Marian at the UC Tennis Complex. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
