No. 5 Patriots Sweep Georgetown in MSC Opening Series

Williamsburg, KY – After taking the first game of the series yesterday, #5 UC (20-5, 3-0) completed the sweep of Georgetown (4-17, 0-3) in their Mid-South Conference opener on Friday afternoon at Doyle Buhl Stadium. Cumberlands took both games of the twin bill with a 9-1 victory in game one and 10-0 shutout in game two. The Patriots combined for 22 hits across the two games played today and outscored the Tigers 19-1.
 
No. 5 Cumberlands Slides Past Tigers, 9-1
Knicko Billings took the start on the mound and was credited with his fourth win of the season after throwing a complete game with six strikeouts across 7.0 innings. The senior allowed just one run and forced six groundouts with five flyouts on over 100 pitches.
 
At the plate, catcher Charlie Muniz went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Edwin Martinez batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. Going 2-for-4, Christian Thompson ended the game with a double and crossed the plate twice.
 
The Patriots continued their hot hitting from yesterday, putting five runs up on the board in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead. Thompson led off with a double down the right field line and advanced on an error by the shortstop with Muniz at the plate. Andiarena was then issued a walk to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Pedro Vasquez singled through the right side to plate the first run of the game for UC. Next at-bat, all base runners advanced on a wild pitch to score another run. Alec Gonzalez reached first on the second error of the inning for the Tigers to bring in a third run. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Martinez grounded out to second base, scoring Vasquez. Trent Prokes followed with an RBI groundout of his own to drive in the fifth run of the frame.
 
After a scoreless second inning, Georgetown scored their first run of the game in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 5-1.
 
UC answered quickly in the bottom of the frame to bring the lead back up to five at 6-1. With one out, Alec Gonzalez drew a walk. After Gonzalez stole second, Martinez sent him home on a single through the right side.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the bats came alive again for the Pats. Following a Jose Valentin walk and Thompson single, Muniz hit a three-run home run to right center, his 15th of the season to give Cumberlands a 9-1 lead.
 
Billings was strong the rest of the way, allowing just three hits through the final three frames to secure the 9-1 win in game one.
 
No. 5 Cumberlands Earns Run-Rule Victory over Georgetown, 10-0
On the mound, Wesley Culley got the start and earned his third win of the season. Culley threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits with nine strikeouts. JD Price pitched one inning in relief and was impressive, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
 
Christian Thompson batted 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI. Edwin Martinez went 1-for-4 with a home run, while Charlie Muniz added a 2-for-5 game with a double and an RBI.
 
After a couple of scoreless frames, UC got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Shelton was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was pinch ran for by Ben Snapp. One batter later, Snapp scored all the way from first on a Thompson double down the left field line. The Pats brought in a second run when Andiarena reached on an error, scoring Thompson.
 
UC tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo shot from Martinez, his second of the season to give UC a 3-0 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Cumberlands took advantage of another Georgetown mistake on an error by the second baseman to make it 4-0.
 
The Patriots broke this one open in the bottom of the eighth with six runs on seven hits to end the game in a 10-0 run-rule. UC put two runners on right away with back-to-back hits from Clay Shelton and Caden Petrey. Thompson followed with a two-RBI single to make it a 6-0 score. After a Muniz single, Andiarena doubled to right field to plate another run, extending the lead to 7-0. After the first out of the inning was recorded, Gonzalez hit a two-RBI double into the left center gap to drive in two more. Jose Valentin was the last batter of the game after he singled to left field to give UC their sixth and final run of the frame.  
 
Cumberlands will remain at home for a midweek matchup against (RV) Milligan on March 18th. First pitch from Doyle Buhl Stadium is set for 2 p.m. ET.
