Henderson, TN – The ninth-ranked Patriots (22-6, 4-0) earned a hard-fought 5-4 win over Freed-Hardeman (17-12, 0-1) in the series opener on Friday evening. The Lions had the tying and go-ahead run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Cooper Morgan was able to record two big outs to secure the win for UC.

After the second out of the inning was recorded, Max Harper walked to put two runners on. With two outs, Vasquez delivered a three-run home run to left center, his sixth of the season to give UC an early 3-0 advantage.

After three scoreless frames, the Pats got on the scoreboard once again in the top of the fifth. Petrey hit a leadoff homer to right field to extend the lead to 4-0, his eighth of the season.

The Lions were able to get one back in the bottom of the frame to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Freed-Hardeman scored two more to cut the deficit to 4-3.

UC responded with a run in the top of the seventh to bring the lead back up to two, 5-3. Christian Thompson drew a leadoff walk, then stole second to put himself into scoring position. Andiarena followed with an RBI ground-rule double to score Thompson from second.
