Knoxville, TN – The No.5 UC Baseball team fell in a road contest at Johnson University, 10-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Russell Morgan Field. Cumberlands tallied six hits and four runs, with four runners left on base. The pitching staff recorded eight strikeouts combined and just three walks.
Caden Petrey went 1-for-1 at the plate, with a home run, walk, and two RBI. Jaylen Jones was the only player to collect multiple hits in the game for UC, batting 2-for-4 with two singles and two runs scored. Charlie Muniz drove in a pair of runs as well.
Stuart Tharle was credited with the loss. Tharle pitched 2.2 innings, recording one strikeout but gave up seven runs on seven hits. Cooper Morgan entered the game in relief in the bottom of the third. He marked four strikeouts while only allowing one run. Jake Kmiecik and JD Price also came into the game in relief. The duo combined for three strikeouts and gave up just two runs on four hits.
After a scoreless first inning, it was the Royals that jumped out to the early lead. Johnson University scored seven runs on six hits to take a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
UC responded in their next at-bat, cutting the deficit to 7-2 on a two-run home run by Caden Petrey.
The Royals tacked on a run in both the fourth and sixth frames to take a 9-2 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Patriots scored their final two runs of the game on a two-RBI single from Muniz, making it a 9-4 ballgame.
Johnson University added one more run in the bottom of the frame to take this one 10-4.
Cumberlands will travel to Lake Wales, FL to compete in the Warner Invitational on Friday, March 7th. The Pats will play a doubleheader against Aquinas (Mich.) and Warner University (Fl.).
