Patriots Advance to AAC Finals Behind Fast Start

Williamsburg, KY – Ashlee Baker and Florence Andrieu combined for 13 points to lead the second-seed and fifth-ranked Cumberlands women's lacrosse team to an 18-9 win over third-seed Georgetown Friday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, the Patriots improve to 14-3 overall and advance to the AAC Championship game for the third straight year.

Baker led the way for UC with five goals and seven points, while Andrieu notched four goals and six points.  Aleyah Belton added three goals to go along with a pair of assists.  Anna Lobbezoo dished out a team-high three assists.  Koral Hadac scooped a career-high 13 draw controls to go along with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.  Emma Rittman and Reese Kincaid notched three caused turnovers each, while Mia Bosah made eight saves.

UC came out with a strong defensive effort as Bosah made a save, while Belton and Kincaid each tallied a caused turnover.  UC struck first as Belton found Baker for a goal at the 10:04 mark.  Cumberlands added back-to-back goals from Marisa Helsten and Baker to make it a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.  After Georgetown got on the board, Andrieu and Lobbezoo each dished out an assist to extend the lead to 5-1 with 3:18 remaining.  Andrieu netted two goals in the final minute of the period to give UC a 7-3 advantage.

Cumberlands picked up the defensive pressure in the second quarter tallying four caused turnovers, including two from Hadac in the first five minutes of play.  Hadac scooped a pair of ground balls both of which led to goals from Baker and Belton to make it a 9-3 lead with 8:52 remaining.  The Tigers add a man-up goal before UC added goals from Lisy and a transition goal from Andrieu to take an 11-4 lead into the break.

Bosah made a pair of saves, while the Pats defense tallied three caused turnovers to hold Georgetown scoreless over the first ten minutes of the third quarter.  Cumberlands extended their lead as Andrieu connected with Baker for a goal, while Belton converted a free position attempt to make it a 13-4 lead.  Bosah added a later save and on the transition Andrieu put a well-placed shot into the cage giving UC the 14-5 lead.

Belton added a free position goal early in the fourth quarter to make it 15-5.  UC added two more goals from Rittman and Morgan Tate to extend their lead to 17-5 with 8:54 remaining.  Georgetown netted four of the final five goals of the game for the 18-9 final.

UC advances to the AAC championship game against top-seed Reinhardt on Saturday, April 19th, at 2 p.m.  It's the third straight year that these two teams meet in the title game.
