Lebanon, TN – The #7 Patriots fell to (RV) Cumberland University 4-0 in the regular series finale on Saturday afternoon. UC was unable to plate a run for just the first time all season. Cumberlands will head into the postseason 41-8 overall, 16-2 in the Mid-South Conference, and will be the #1 seed in the MSC Tournament next week after securing the regular season title for the third consecutive season.
Stuart Tharle (2-3) got the start on the mound in the rubber match for UC and was credited with the loss. The sophomore pitched three innings, allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Nolan Wilson was the first to enter in relief, giving up one run on two hits in one inning of work. UC used four pitchers the rest of the way, combining for two strikeouts with no earned runs.
At the plate, the Patriots struggled offensively against some tough pitching from the Phoenix, mustering just three hits. Charlie Muniz had two of those hits in a 2-for-4 performance. Alec Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a single and a stolen base.
After a scoreless opening frame, Cumberland University got on the board with an RBI-single in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Phoenix added another run to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
UC posed a scoring threat in the top of the fifth as Gonzalez reached first on an error, then stole second to put himself into scoring position. Edwin Martinez followed with a walk to put two runners on. However, the Pats were unable to convert to remain scoreless.
The Phoenix would tack on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to finalize the game at 4-0.
Cumberlands will now gear up for the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Bowling Green, KY on Wednesday April 30th.
