Williamsburg, KY – The third ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse battled #5 Reinhardt throughout the contest but fell short dropping the conference match 12-10 Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. After the game, UC moves to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
Maalek Wilson led the way for UC with four assists, while
Nick Kava,
Evan Barton, and
Johnathon Vanover tallied three points apiece.
Owen Hebenstreit notched a team-best three caused turnovers, while
Ty Grooms scooped a team-high five ground balls.
Dakota White and
Michael Adams combined for 15-26 on faceoffs with six ground balls.
Nathan Foskey made seven saves in the contest.
Foskey made a save a minute into the contest and UC struck first as Wilson found Kava for a goal five minutes into the contest. After the Eagles tied the score, the Patriots responded a minute later as Wilson found Barton for a goal making it 2-1 with 6:49 remaining. Schwaiger notched a caused turnover and on the possession the Wilson-Kava connection struck again extending the lead to 3-1. Reinhardt netted two goals to even the score after the first quarter.
Hebenstreit notched a pair of caused turnovers in the first two minutes of the second quarter while Wilson's shot deflected off the post keeping the score tied. After Reinhardt netted a pair of goals, Vanover dodged in and put a well-placed shot into the cage cutting the deficit to 5-4. Cumberlands tied the game just over a minute later as Caden Abott found
Mason Miller for a goal. A late goal by Rienhardt gave the Eagles a 6-5 edge at the break.
Reinhardt netted four goals to open the third quarter extending their lead to 10-5 with 8:24 remaining. The Patriots started to rally as Miller netted his second goal, before Kava connected with
Will Rogers to cut the deficit to 10-7 with 5:33 remaining. Foskey added a pair of saves, while Vanover netted his second goal of the contest bringing Cumberlands within two at 10-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded possession in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as Cumberlands continued to close the deficit with a Barton goal at the 7:00 mark. The two teams traded goals, however, the Patriots had a pair of shots that deflected off the post for the 12-10 final.
Cumberlands return to the field Saturday, April 12, when they host Tennessee Wesleyan in an AAC showdown. This is UC's regular season finale and the Patriots will honor its 2025 senior class prior to the game.
