Williamsburg, KY – The No. 9 Patriots Baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon to complete the sweep of Carolina University, extending their winning streak to 11 games. UC shutout the Bruins in game one of the doubleheader, 6-0, before scoring a season-high 31 runs in a 31-2 blowout win in game two. The Patriots outscored Carolina University 52-2 in the three games played this weekend.
No. 9 Cumberlands Blanks Carolina University, 6-0
Knicko Billings (7-1) got the start on the mound and was credited with his seventh win of the season after tossing a complete game shutout across seven innings, his second complete game of the season. The senior allowed just four hits while striking out five.
At the plate, Charlie Muniz led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, falling just shy of the cycle with a home run, triple, and a double.
Alec Gonzalez batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's.
Edwin Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Cumberlands got out to an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first on four hits. With one-out, Muniz tripled to right field, then was pinch run for by
Zamaurion Hatcher.
Derick Andiarena followed with a single to plate the first run of the game. After
Pedro Vasquez was hit by a pitch, Gonzalez hit a two-RBI double into the left center gap, scoring Andiarena and Vasquez to make it 3-0. Next at-bat, Martinez hit an RBI-single up to center field, extending the lead to 4-0.
UC made it 5-0 with another run in the bottom of the second.
Caden Petrey was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, then later scored on a Muniz RBI-double down the left field line.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pats tacked on a run to finalize the game at 6-0 courtesy of a Charlie Muniz solo home run, his 25
th of the season.
No. 9 Cumberlands Dominates the Bruins, 31-2
At the plate, 15 different batters notched a hit for UC and six had multiple hits.
Trent Prokes was impressive at the plate after entering the game in the top of the fourth. The outfielder finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and six RBI's.
Pedro Vasquez added a 4-for-6 performance, collecting three doubles and three RBI's.
Max Harper went 1-for-2 with a walk and four RBI's.
On the mound,
Cooper Morgan (2-0) got the start and was credited with the win. Morgan threw three innings, not allowing a single run or hit with four strikeouts.
Yannis Rembert entered in relief in the top of the fourth, allowing one run with a strikeout in just one inning of work.
Ben Rohrbach,
Jake Kmiecik, and
JD Price also saw action, combining for just one run on two hits and striking out eight.
Once again, UC got out to a hot start at the plate, scoring five runs in the opening frame to take a 5-0 lead.
Christian Thompson led off the inning with an infield hit, followed by a Harper walk to put two runners on base. Charlie Muniz then hit a single to center field to load the bases. Next at-bat, Vasquez brought in the first run of the game by reaching first on an error. Shortstop,
Alec Gonzalez, followed with an RBI-single to center field to score Harper.
Edwin Martinez delivered an RBI-single of his own to bring in two more.
Clay Shelton brought in the fifth run on an RBI-ground out to shortstop.
In the bottom of the second inning, the UC bats exploded once again, this time with 11 runs to widen the score, 16-0.
Derick Andiarena began the inning with a double to left field, then with one-out Muniz hit an RBI-double to left field. Vasquez continued his hot start at the plate with an RBI-double to right center, scoring Muniz. Gonzalez added a double of his own down the left field line to drive in another run. Martinez plated Gonzalez with an RBI-single to right field. The train kept moving as Shelton delivered his second RBI of the game with a single through the right side, and the was score was 10-0. Couple of batters later, Andiarena drew a bases loaded walk to bring in a run. With the bases still loaded, Harper blasted a grand slam to left field, extending the lead to 15-0. Vasquez would tack on one more in the inning with an RBI-double to left center.
The Patriots extended their lead to 20-0 with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the third. Prokes launched a two-run homer to right center. Later in the inning,
Ben Snapp and Shelton walked with the bases loaded to plate two more.
UC tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a
Zamaurion Hatcher home run, his second of the season.
The Pats offense added eight runs in the fifth, followed by two runs in the sixth to reach the 31-2 final score.
Cumberlands will be back in action on Tuesday April 8
th when they host #5 Tennessee Wesleyan for a midweek contest. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. ET from Doyle Buhl Stadium.
