Lewiston, ID – The #7 seeded Patriots dropped a tough contest to the #4 seed Hope International 10-4 on Friday morning at Harris Field. UC outhit the Royals 10-9 but were unable to convert some timely hits in game one of the 2025 Avista NAIA World Series. Kailen Hamson made history as he broke the program record for single season strikeouts in a season with 127.
Kailen Hamson got the start on the mound and pitched well. The senior threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
At the plate, Trent Prokes led the way with a 3-for-5 performance, tallying two doubles and an RBI. Max Harper batted 2-for-5 with two singles and a run batted in. Derick Andiarena went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
UC grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after scoring a run to begin the game. Christian Thompson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. One batter later, Andiarena walked to put two runners on and nobody out. Both runners proceeded to move up one bag on a wild pitch. Next at-bat, Harper hit an RBI-single to center field to plate Thompson.
In the bottom of the first inning, Hamson struck out three of the first four batters he faced to set the tone.
Hope International evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the second inning.
After two scoreless frames, the Pats jumped back in front with a run on a Royals mistake to make it 2-1.
The Royals responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take their first lead of the day, 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hope International added another run to stretch the lead to 5-2.
UC did not go away, scoring two runs in their next at-bat to cut the deficit to one, 5-4. Back-to-back doubles from Prokes and Edwin Martinez plated a run to start off the frame. Prokes then advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a passed ball in the next at-bat.
The Royals were able to put this game away with five runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 10-4 victory.
No. 7 seed Cumberlands will play the No. 10 seed Grand View (Iowa) in an elimination game on Saturday May 24th at 3:00 p.m. PDT / 6:00 EDT.
