Williamsburg, KY – Patriots Head Softball Coach Bruce Lenington announces the addition of Cassie Valdez and Gilbert Alvarado II to his coaching staff for his first season at the helm.
"Having Cassie and Gil join the staff is incredibly important to us hitting the ground running. They have both been in the middle of the success we had at OLLU and know everything about the nuances and expectations that comes with competing at the highest level. The players at UC will find them both helpful and selfless with their time and energy in getting them better, on and off the field," said Coach Lenington.
Prior to joining the Patriots, Valdez and Alvarado coached under Lenington for the Our Lady of the Lake Saints
"I'm truly blessed Coach Bruce gave me the opportunity to join this program," said Valdez. "I'm excited for this team and everything we can achieve together this season. The campus is beautiful, and the support staff here is nothing short of amazing. I can't wait to pour my energy, passion, and knowledge into helping these athletes grow both on and off the field. Big things are ahead, and I'm ready to get to work!"
Valdez finished her collegiate playing career with the Saints in 2024 as an NAIA National Champion, the 2024 NAIA Pitcher of the Year, a three-time NAIA All-American, and the MVP of the 2024 World Series. Last season, Valdez served as a volunteer coach for the Saints, while also competed for the Mexican National Team and playing professionally.
Joining beside Valdez is Gilbert Alvarado II, who also comes from OLLU. "I'm truly honored and excited for the opportunity to represent the Cumberlands softball program. I'm eager to hit the ground running and work alongside this incredible team, dedicated staff, supportive administration, and the welcoming Williamsburg community to build something truly special," said Alvarado.
Alvarado graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University in 2024. While with the Saints from 2022-2025, he primarily worked with outfielders as well as covering first base coach responsibilities and hitting preparations. He also helped with the recruiting and scouting aspects of the program. In his time with the OLLU softball program, the team achieved four Red River Conference championships, two RRCC Tournament championships, two NAIA Regional Opening Round championships, two NAIA Region II Coaching Staff of the Year awards, NAIA ATEC X NFCA NAIA National Coaching Staff of the Year, and NAIA World Series Champions.
Both Valdez and Alvarado come from one of the best softball programs in the country. They will join the Patriots for the upcoming season looking to help build upon last year's success, which included a trip to the NAIA World Series.
