Spring Arbor, MI – The eighth-ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team utilized a strong second half to rally and earn a 1-1 draw with tenth-ranked Spring Arbor Saturday afternoon. The Patriots move to 2-0-2 on the season, while Spring Arbor moves to 1-0-2 overall.
Letizia Traversone netted her first collegiate goal, which was the equalizer in the second half.
Carola Fontan earned an assist on the play, marking her 28
th assist of her career which moves her into a tie with Nery Saucedo for fifth place in program history. Three other Pats players recorded two shots apiece.
Morgan White made a career-high five saves in the match.
The two teams traded possession over the opening ten minutes of the match, until Spring Arbor forced a corner kick. Off the corner,
Morgan White punched the ball away to keep the match scoreless. White added a save in the 20', while the Patriots defense also blocked a shot. Spring Arbor took advantage of a corner kick as Maislin Joldersma finished for a goal to put the Cougars in front 1-0. The possession remaining in the middle third of the field over the next 15 minutes of play. In the closing minutes of the first half Cumberlands picked up their intensity as Inez Martin and
Nicole Araujo each put a shot on frame, however, UC trailed 1-0 at the break.
The Patriots continued to pressure in the second half as Juliette Charriez headed a cross into the box, which was saved by Reagan Kohler. Spring Arbor looked to extend their lead but White made the save keeping it a one goal game. Both teams had scoring opportunities over the next few minutes, including a shot from
Noah Paalman that sailed right of the post. UC earned a free kick from just outside the box in the 65', however,
Carola Fontan's kick just went wide. A minute later, Fontan pushed the ball forward to
Letizia Traversone, who took one touch before putting into the net tying the match at 1-1 in the 66'. Cumberlands backline made a huge defensive stand with block and a save keeping the match even in the 71'. The Patriots pushed the ball into the offensive third notching four shots, including one from Traversone that was saved to keep the score 1-1. Spring Arbor looked for the go-ahead goal in the 88' but White was there making her fifth save of the match. Cumberlands earned a free kick in the closing seconds of the match however couldn't get a shot off as the final seconds ticked away.
The Patriots will remain in Michigan and face ninth-ranked Aquinas on Monday, September 1
st. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
