Williamsburg, Ky. — The University of the Cumberlands #2 Men's Soccer team delivered a dominant performance in their home opener Saturday night, defeating Bryan (TN) 4–0 at UC Lacrosse/Soccer Stadium.
The Patriots struck early and often in the first half. Just over a minute into the match, Bruno Marques scored his first goal of the night off a dual assist from Hugo Champalloux and Ryota Nakamura. Less than nine minutes later, Patrick Ostergreen doubled the lead with his first goal of the season. Marques added his second tally of the night in the 17th minute, finishing a build-up play assisted by Champalloux and Ostergreen, giving UC a 3–0 advantage heading into halftime.
Cumberlands continued to control the pace in the second half. The Patriots capped the scoring in the 75th minute when Luca Piazza converted on a long feed from Ostergreen, who finished the night with a goal and two assists. Marques recorded a brace, while Champalloux tallied two assists to pace the attack.
Martin Gomez started in net and Zachary Dean handled the second half, combining for the clean sheet. Dean notched the Patriots' lone save.
Cumberlands outshot Bryan 15–2 and held an 8–1 edge in shots on goal. The Patriots earned a 7–0 advantage in corner kicks, while Bryan's keeper totaled four saves. In a physical contest, the match featured four cautions and a late red card to the hosts in the 83rd minute.
The win also marked the 100th career victory at Cumberlands for Head Coach Paulo Neto, adding to the historic night in Williamsburg.
Cumberlands will return to action on Tuesday, September 16, when they host West Virginia University Institute of Technology at 2 p.m. at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
