Rio Grande, Oh. – The #4 University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision on the road to RV Rio Grande in a non-conference matchup Saturday evening.
The opening 45 minutes saw both sides trade chances in a physical, fast-paced half. Goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo set the tone early with a pair of key saves to keep the RedStorm scoreless. On the other end, UC pushed forward with looks from Mario Fernandez and junior Samuel Dolobaipu, who fired two attempts just over the bar midway through the half. Hugo Champalloux added a shot that was blocked in the 22nd minute, while Emil Skursch generated the Patriots' first corner at the nine-minute mark. Despite Rio Grande holding a 7-4 edge in shots, the UC back line held firm to send the match into halftime tied 0-0.
Coming out of the break, Rio Grande capitalized in the 64th minute to put the RedStorm ahead 1-0. The Patriots nearly responded minutes later as Leandro Nico Romero Protto and Luca Piazza both had chances sail high, while Dolobaipu connected on a header that just missed the frame. Rio Grande doubled its lead in the 77th minute as Lucas O'Donnell converted, extending the margin to 2-0.
Cumberlands continued to press in the closing minutes, earning back-to-back corners from Skursch and creating looks from Adrian Choco and Dolobaipu, but the RedStorm defense held strong to close out the match. Izquierdo finished the night with four saves in goal.
For the match, Cumberlands tallied nine shots, including one on goal, and earned four corner kicks. Rio Grande recorded 12 shots, six on frame, while the Patriots defense stood tall behind Izquierdo's four saves.
With the result, Cumberlands moves to 5-3-2 on the season. The Patriots return home to Williamsburg for a top-20 clash, hosting #17 Georgia Gwinnett College on Wednesday, October 1, at 7 p.m.
