Williamsburg, KY – The #14 Patriots women's basketball team trailed by as many as 11 points, however rallied in the second half to defeat (RV) Georgetown 70-66 Thursday night on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, UC improves to 17-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Tigers move to 16-4 and 1-3 in the MSC.
Joy Kendrick led the way with 23 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Lakin Burke notched 14 points and eight rebounds, while
Peyton Mounce and
Jaydyn Carrico finished with seven points apiece, while combining for 16 rebounds.
Georgetown jumped out to a 6-2 lead, however,
Joy Kendrick hit a pull-up jumper to pull the Patriots with two at 6-4. After the Tigers stretch their lead to 11-4, UC scored five unanswered including a three-pointer from
Darcie Anderson to cut it to 11-9 with 4:16 remaining. Georgetown closed out the quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 22-13 lead after the first quarter.
After trading baskets to open the second quarter,
Peyton Mounce and
Jaydyn Carrico hit back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit 25-19 with 5:57 remaining. On the next possession, Kendrick notched a steal and converted a three-point play to bring the Pats within three at 25-22. A few minutes later, Burke netted six straight points make it 33-29 in favor of the Tigers with 1:51 left. The two teams traded baskets in the closing minute giving the Tigers a 37-31 lead at the break.
UC opened the second half with Carrico taking a hard drive and finishing with her left hand. Georgetown extended their lead to 11-points, before Kendrick hit a free-throw line jumper to cut it to 44-35. The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes, before
Aden Clark drained a pair of three-pointers to cut the deficit to 50-46 with 1:34 remaining. Kendrick followed with a three-pointer from the corner pulling UC within a point a 50-49 after the third quarter.
Cumberlands takes the first lead of the game a minute into the fourth quarter as
Darcie Anderson and Burke convert back-to-back layups to take a 53-50 advantage.
Noel Smith grabbed an offensive board that led to a Kendrick jumper extending the lead to 55-51 with 7:22 remaining. The lead changed multiple times over the next few minutes, before Anderson connected with Kendrick on the wing for a three-pointer putting UC in front 63-62 with 2:20 remaining. With just under a minute remaining, Burke grabbed an offensive board and putback to give the Patriots a 67-64 lead with 45 seconds left. UC hit a trio from the charity stripe to earn the 70-66 final.
Cumberlands will return to the court next Thursday, January 29
th, when they host #2 Bethel. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
