Williamsburg, KY – The 21
st-ranked Cumberlands volleyball team were efficient earning the 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-15) win over Midway Wednesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. The victory was the 300
th career win for Head Coach Kathryn Park as the Patriots improve to 17-4 on the season.
Savanah Jolly led the way for UC with 29 assists and 11 digs, while
Sara Zampedri notched 12 kills and five digs.
Brynnley Bryant added eight kills, while
Martina Frangella chipped in six kills.
Alana Shiery and
Josie Newcom combined for 10 blocks in the match.
Morgan Bentel opened the match with an ace, while Shiery was a part of two blocks giving UC the 3-1 lead. The two teams went back-and-forth until a four-point run by the Eagles gave them a 13-12 lead. UC responded with back-to-back kills from Bryant and Frangella to retake the lead. Cumberlands closed out the set on an 11-1 run that included four kills as the Patriots took the set 25-15.
UC jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set as Shiery notched a pair of blocks to go along with a kill.
Ryann Livingston and Bryant each added an ace as part of a four-point run extending the lead to 13-4. The two teams traded points as a Frangella kill gave UC a 21-14 advantage. The next play was a big rally that included pancakes from Bryant and Livingston before Jolly connected with Zampedri for a kill extending the lead to 22-14. Zampedri added a late kill as Cumberlands took the set 25-16 and the 2-0 lead.
Cumberlands took a 9-2 lead in the third set as Jolly dished out four assists. Midway pulled within five points before Bryant and Zampedri notched consecutive kills to take the 14-7 advantage. UC added a four-point rally, capped off with a Bentel ace making it 18-11. The Patriots notched six of the final eight points, including a pair of kills from
Allison Moneypenny to close out the set 25-15 and the 3-0 final.
The Patriots return to the court Friday, October 2
nd, when they travel to McKenzie, TN to face Bethel. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
