Patriots Battle #7 Life to 1-1 Draw

Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team battled #7 Life University to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at the UC Soccer Complex. The Patriots held a one-goal advantage for much of the second half before the Running Eagles found the equalizer with five seconds remaining. With the draw, Cumberlands moves to 6-4-3 overall while remaining 2-1-1 in Mid-South Conference play.

The opening half saw limited chances for either side before Life tested Zachary Dean in the 34', but the Patriots goalkeeper was there for the save. Cumberlands responded with a strong attacking sequence as Jesus Macaya put a shot on frame in the 36' before Conor McVeigh forced another save in the 38'. Nico Romero nearly broke through moments later, but his attempt struck the crossbar before Yota Ishikawa sent a shot wide right. Despite the late pressure, the teams went into halftime scoreless.

Cumberlands wasted little time getting on the board after the break. In the 50', Romero set up Luca Piazza, who found the back of the net for his second goal of the season to give UC a 1-0 advantage.

Life looked for an immediate response, earning a corner kick before Dean made another save in the 52'. The Running Eagles continued to apply pressure with three more shots over the next eight minutes, but the Patriots' defense held firm to preserve the lead. McVeigh answered with a shot on frame in the 61', forcing a save from the Life goalkeeper.

UC continued to look for an insurance goal as Romero headed an attempt wide following a corner in the 73'. Dunsting Cohen Jr. and Macaya each added chances before Piazza had another shot blocked in the 80'. Life responded with a shot wide in the 84', but the score remained 1-0.

The Patriots nearly extended their lead in the 88' when Ishikawa put a shot on frame, but the Life goalkeeper made the save. The Running Eagles continued to press in the closing minutes and broke through in the 90', finding the equalizer with just five seconds remaining to secure the 1-1 draw.

Cumberlands outshot Life 11-9, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal, while the Running Eagles held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Dean finished with two saves for the Patriots.

Cumberlands returns to action Thursday, October 15, when the Patriots host Bethel University (Tenn.) at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
