Patriots Head to Bethel Looking to Bounce Back in MSC Play

10/16/2026 9:01:00 AM

WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The University of the Cumberlands football team returns to the road Saturday as the Patriots travel to McKenzie, TN, to face Bethel University in a Mid-South Conference matchup. UC enters the contest at 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play following a narrow 33-26 loss to No. 13 Campbellsville, while the Wildcats come in at 2-3 after defeating Faulkner 21-10 last weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM ET (1:30 PM CT).

Cumberlands holds a 7-6 advantage in the series against Bethel dating back to 2001, including a 34-10 victory in Williamsburg last season. The Patriots will look for their first victory in McKenzie since 2017, when UC edged the Wildcats 20-19.

Responding to Adversity
Despite coming up short against Campbellsville, Cumberlands showed its ability to respond to difficult situations throughout the contest. The Patriots overcame multiple deficits and tied the game twice in the second half before their final comeback attempt fell short. Head Coach Shan Housekeeper was encouraged by his team's determination and ability to make plays in critical moments.

"There were a lot of great things to take away," said Housekeeper. "There were a lot of big plays in all phases, from offense, defense and special teams, where we made critical plays. The resilience and the resolve of our guys is definitely apparent."

Housekeeper believes that willingness to compete provides an important foundation as the Patriots prepare for another conference opponent.

"They care, and they really want to be successful," said Housekeeper. "They show how much they're willing to compete all the way through to the end. We came up short, but I thought we did a great job of testing our resolve."

Containing Bethel's Playmakers
Bethel enters Saturday averaging 266 yards of offense per game, including 186 through the air. While the Wildcats have averaged 15.6 points per contest, they have demonstrated the ability to create explosive plays, including a season-long 90-yard completion.

The Wildcats have utilized two quarterbacks throughout the season. Silas Teat has completed 37 passes for 513 yards and three touchdowns, while Jaylan Brown has added 417 yards and three scores. Micah Jones leads the receiving corps with 21 catches for 294 yards and three touchdowns, followed by Zion Bryan with 235 yards on 17 receptions.

"They've got some really athletic kids," said Housekeeper. "They've got playmakers at running back and some really good receivers and a quarterback that can extend plays and make things happen. Their offensive line is solid as well."

The Patriots enter the matchup coming off one of their strongest defensive performances of the season. Against Campbellsville, UC recorded 11 tackles for loss and four sacks while holding a Tigers offense that had averaged more than 300 passing yards per game to just 121.

Zander Curry led the effort with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Jeremiah DeRoche added nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Jaquon Hall contributed 1.5 sacks, and Kantrel Smith finished with 2.5 tackles for loss.

"Our guys are really starting to understand how critical each component is on defense and how it has to complement each other," said Housekeeper. "Everybody counts on each other, and our guys are starting to buy into that and understand it."

Against a Bethel offense capable of generating big plays, Housekeeper emphasized the importance of maintaining defensive assignments and finishing opportunities."It all starts with being able to execute our responsibilities individually and remain sound in the scheme," said Housekeeper. "When the opportunity is presented, you've got to make the play. Sack, tackle, tackle for loss, pass breakup, whatever it might be, we've got to finish those plays."

Breaking Through the Wildcats' Defense
Bethel's defense has been one of the Wildcats' strengths through five games. The unit has recorded 27.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks while holding opponents to 168.2 passing yards per game.

Cumberlands counters with an offense averaging 422.8 yards and 35.2 points per game. The Patriots have shown the ability to attack defenses in multiple ways, with Juan Bullard Jr. and Jayden Clayton leading the ground game and Drew Gregg directing a passing attack featuring Michael Petty and Cade Lamb.

One potential opportunity for UC comes on the ground, where Bethel has allowed 184 rushing yards per game and 10 rushing touchdowns. The Patriots have averaged nearly 189 rushing yards per contest, with Bullard and Clayton providing a productive tandem in the backfield.

However, Bethel's ability to create negative plays will challenge a Cumberlands offense looking to regain its rhythm after being limited to 248 total yards against Campbellsville. Housekeeper believes the Patriots must remain focused on execution and capitalize when opportunities arise.

"We've got to play with clear minds and intensity and execute," said Housekeeper. "We have to be prepared for those big moments, and then when the big moments hit, take advantage."

Finding an Edge on Special Teams
Special teams could once again play an important role Saturday after several momentum-changing plays in Cumberlands' most recent contest.
Against Campbellsville, Ronye Watson returned kickoffs for 56 and 46 yards, helping set up scoring opportunities for the Patriots. UC also capitalized on a failed punt attempt to set up a one-yard touchdown run by Gregg, while Jalavis Wilson blocked a 49-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to give Cumberlands another opportunity to tie the game.

However, the Patriots also surrendered a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown immediately after tying the game at 19-19 in the third quarter.

"We made some really important, impactful plays in that game on special teams," said Housekeeper. "Obviously, we missed on some. We've got to make more than we miss."
Bethel has punted 29 times through five games, averaging 36.8 yards per attempt. The Wildcats have also allowed 10.3 yards per punt return, creating potential opportunities for Cumberlands to influence field position.

Housekeeper believes finding consistency in the kicking and return games could provide an important advantage moving forward.

"One word that's tough in modern times that we talk a lot about is consistency," said Housekeeper. "We've got to be consistent all the way across the board, offense, defense and special teams. They can really give you a winning edge, and that's what we want to be able to find."

Winning the Details
As the Patriots prepare for their second conference matchup, limiting self-inflicted mistakes remains a major emphasis. Cumberlands committed four interceptions and was penalized 12 times for 107 yards against Campbellsville. Several of those mistakes came during scoring opportunities, including a late touchdown that was erased by a holding penalty.Bethel has shown the ability to capitalize on mistakes, forcing eight turnovers through five games while recording 11 sacks.

"That's been a big point of emphasis for us all year, takeaways, turnovers and penalties," said Housekeeper. "We're continuing to emphasize it and work on it in practice. Guys are held accountable for their actions on the field from a penalty perspective as well."

Housekeeper stressed that eliminating every mistake may not be realistic, but preventing those errors from changing the outcome of games is essential.

"Our focus is to minimize and not allow those to hurt us in critical moments like they did," said Housekeeper. "Hopefully the kids can understand why we emphasize those key areas and not continue to make ourselves stumble."

With another challenging conference matchup ahead, Housekeeper wants the Patriots to maintain their focus throughout the entire contest.

"It's really important for us to bounce back right away in conference play because every single Saturday we've got good competition," said Housekeeper. "You've got to have attention to detail the entire game. We've got to make sure our execution is the best it's been all year."

Cumberlands looks to return to the win column and earn its first MSC victory of the season when the Patriots face Bethel on Saturday in McKenzie, TN. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM ET (1:30 PM CT).
