Romero’s Early Goal Lifts Patriots Past Campbellsville

Campbellsville, KY – Nico Romero scored less than a minute into the match as the University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team earned a 1-0 road win over Campbellsville University Thursday night. With the win, the Patriots improve to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in Mid-South Conference play.

Cumberlands wasted no time getting on the board as Romero found the back of the net, for his sixth goal of the season, just 48 seconds into the contest to give UC a 1-0 advantage. Campbellsville looked for the equalizer in the 15', but Zachary Dean made the save to preserve the lead.

The Patriots continued to create chances as Romero sent an attempt wide in the 22' before Dunsting Cohen Jr. put a shot on frame in the 30'. Cohen added another opportunity off a late corner, but his header went wide as Cumberlands carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Campbellsville increased its pressure after the break, earning four corner kicks over the opening 13 minutes of the second half. The Patriots' defense held firm through the stretch before UC generated chances from Cohen and Romero near the hour mark.

The Tigers continued to search for the equalizer, but Dean came up with another save in the 74'. Cumberlands' back line also blocked multiple attempts throughout the second half as the Patriots protected the one-goal advantage. UC continued to push forward with chances from Samuel Dolobaipu, Eduardo Pedroza and Vinicius Serafim over the closing minutes before securing the 1-0 final.

Cumberlands outshot Campbellsville 12-7, while both sides put two shots on goal. Dean finished with two saves to earn the clean sheet, marking the Patriots' third shutout in their last four matches.

Cumberlands returns home Sunday, October 4, when the Patriots host the University of Northwestern Ohio at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
