WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The No. 24 University of the Cumberlands football team returns to James H. Taylor, II Stadium Saturday evening as the Patriots welcome RV Cumberland University for a Mid-South Conference Homecoming showdown. UC enters at 5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play following a 38-21 road victory over Bethel, while the Phoenix come in at 4-3 after falling 31-14 to No. 12 Campbellsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 PM.
Cumberlands holds a 14-9 advantage in the series dating back to 2001, including an 8-3 record in Williamsburg. However, the Phoenix have won the last three meetings, including a 40-37 overtime victory last season.
Winning the Battle Up Front
Saturday's matchup features two productive rushing attacks, with Cumberlands averaging 195.7 yards per game and Cumberland producing 215. The Phoenix have scored 20 rushing touchdowns this season, while the Patriots have found the end zone 16 times on the ground.
UC's rushing attack has been led by
Jayden Clayton with 527 yards and five touchdowns, while
Juan Bullard Jr. has added 391 yards and five scores. The Patriots will face a Cumberland defense allowing just 112.4 rushing yards per contest.
"That's going to be a game of possessions because they want to try to control the game with the running game, and so do we," said Head Coach
Shan Housekeeper. "Every possession has to have value."
Housekeeper emphasized that establishing the run and making the most of each opportunity will be critical against a team that also looks to control the clock.
Facing a Disruptive Defense
Cumberland U's defense has been among the Phoenix's biggest strengths, limiting opponents to 17.7 points and 242.3 yards per game. The unit has recorded 51.5 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and eight interceptions while allowing just 129.9 passing yards per contest.
"They've got some really talented players and a tough scheme with what they do," said Housekeeper. "They're doing a great job on defense this year and playing at a very high level."
Cumberlands counters with an offense averaging 35.6 points and 420.1 yards per game.
Drew Gregg has thrown for 1,354 yards and 13 touchdowns, while
Michael Petty leads the receiving corps with 488 yards and four scores.
Cade Lamb has added 358 yards and four touchdowns, giving UC multiple options against the Phoenix defense.
Continuing Defensive Growth
On the other side of the ball, Cumberland enters averaging 355.1 yards and 31.7 points per game. The Phoenix have relied heavily on their rushing attack, which has accounted for 1,505 yards and 20 touchdowns through seven contests.
The Patriots have continued to improve defensively, recording 43 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and six interceptions this season.
Zander Curry leads UC with eight tackles for loss, while
Jaquon Hall has recorded a team-high 3.5 sacks.
JD DeRoche leads the Patriots with 51 tackles, followed by
Ritt Tankersley with 50.
UC is coming off a strong defensive performance against Bethel, forcing three turnovers and recording three sacks. Tankersley highlighted the effort with 12 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and an interception.
"I think it's finally starting to connect for them," said Housekeeper. "We're trying to continue to hammer the fundamentals, hammer the small details, and the small details are the difference when it comes down to it."
Protecting Every Possession
With both teams emphasizing the running game, limiting mistakes could play a significant role in Saturday's outcome. Cumberland has forced 12 turnovers this season, including eight interceptions, while committing just 35 penalties for 209 yards.
Cumberlands has committed 65 penalties for 598 yards but showed improvement against Bethel, finishing without a turnover after struggling in that area during its previous two contests.
"Penalties are obviously always a factor," said Housekeeper. "When you play good opponents, you don't want to do things that are going to put yourself behind." Housekeeper noted that the coaching staff continues to emphasize accountability and limiting self-inflicted mistakes as conference play progresses.
Playing for the Patriots Who Came Before
Saturday's Homecoming contest comes as Cumberlands returns to the national rankings for the first time this season, climbing to No. 24 in the latest NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Poll. Cumberland is also receiving votes, setting up another important conference matchup.
While the national recognition is a positive for the program, Housekeeper believes the opportunity to represent Cumberlands in front of former Patriots carries special significance.
"As an alumnus, you always come back and want to see who's wearing your number," said Housekeeper. "You want to see how hard that kid's playing and the urgency that he has."
Housekeeper emphasized the importance of honoring the players who helped build the program and maintaining the standards they established.
"We want to honor the guys that have played here with tremendous effort, great execution and professionalism," said Housekeeper. "I hope we're able to make them proud with the way we play, the way we conduct ourselves and the results that we produce."
The Patriots look to improve to 6-2 overall and earn their second consecutive conference victory when they host RV Cumberland University on Saturday at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 PM.
