Patriots Set to Open MSC Play Against No. 13 Campbellsville

10/9/2026 8:42:00 AM

WILLIAMSBURG, KY – The RV University of the Cumberlands football team returns to action Saturday as the Patriots welcome No. 13 Campbellsville to James H. Taylor, II Stadium for their Mid-South Conference opener. UC enters the matchup at 4-1 following a bye week, while the Tigers also sit at 4-1 after suffering their first loss of the season against Lindsey Wilson. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.

Saturday marks the 38th all-time meeting between the programs, with Cumberlands holding a 24-13 advantage in a series dating back to 1988. The Patriots have won eight of the last 10 matchups, but Campbellsville has claimed the last two, including a 49-34 victory a season ago. Both teams enter the weekend looking to make an early statement in conference play.

A Chance to Reset
After opening the season with four consecutive victories, Cumberlands suffered its first setback against No. 1 Keiser, falling 58-21 in West Palm Beach. The Patriots followed that contest with a bye week, providing an opportunity to regroup before beginning their conference schedule.

Head Coach Shan Housekeeper believes his team has continued to make progress despite the loss, particularly in how the Patriots have responded to adversity.

"We know we're not exactly where we need to be, but we're moving in the right direction," said Housekeeper. "Another thing that doesn't show up on the stat sheet is how our kids have been able to bounce back and respond. Adversity is going to show you what you've got, and we've got good kids."

The additional week gave Cumberlands an opportunity to return to fundamentals while also allowing the team to recover from the opening stretch of the season.

"It gave us a chance to change the routine in the schedule and hit the reset button," said Housekeeper. "We went back and tried to really work some fundamentals and maintain the growth in those areas. Our kids did a good job of practicing well last week."

Containing the Tigers' Attack
Campbellsville enters Saturday boasting one of the conference's most productive offenses, averaging 512.8 yards and 42 points per game. The Tigers have shown balance throughout their first five contests, averaging 306.8 yards through the air and 206 on the ground while scoring 29 touchdowns.

Tiger Quarterback Justyce Law has been at the center of that production, completing 81-of-132 passes for 1,230 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 236 yards and a team-high six touchdowns, giving the Tigers another dimension within their offensive attack. That versatility was on display against Lindsey Wilson, where Campbellsville accumulated 403 yards of offense, including 210 rushing yards while Law added 81 yards and two scores.

For a Cumberlands defense that has recorded 26 tackles for loss and four interceptions through five games, limiting the Tigers' explosive plays and containing Law will be critical.

"He can create some things that you can't draw up as a coach," said Housekeeper. "Players like that are difficult to defend, but hopefully we're able to do some things to nullify a little bit of that and position our guys where they can make plays."

Avoiding Negative Plays
On the other side of the football, Cumberlands will face a Campbellsville defense that has been among the Tigers' biggest strengths this season. The unit has limited opponents to just 13.6 points and 266.4 yards per game while accumulating 31.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

The Patriots counter with an offense averaging 457.8 yards and 37 points per contest. UC has produced 11 rushing touchdowns and 11 passing touchdowns through its opening five games, showcasing the ability to attack opposing defenses in multiple ways.

Juan Bullard Jr. and Jayden Clayton have provided balance in the backfield, each rushing for 355 yards and four touchdowns. Through the air, Drew Gregg has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns, with Michael Petty and Cade Lamb combining for 691 receiving yards.
Against Keiser, UC showed its ability to sustain drives against a nationally ranked defense, including a 75-yard touchdown possession to open the second half. However, negative plays and turnovers ultimately disrupted that momentum.

"We've got to remain disciplined," said Housekeeper. "The things that really hurt us are when we turn the ball over and penalties. If we can eliminate those things, negative plays and turnovers, then I think we're pretty good offensively."

Campbellsville has also been effective against the run, holding opponents to 98.8 rushing yards per game and 3.2 yards per attempt. That creates an important matchup for a Patriot offense averaging more than 200 rushing yards per contest.

"We've got to be disciplined pre-snap, and then we've got to play good technique," said Housekeeper. "I think we've got enough playmakers that we can be explosive with anybody. The objective for us this week and weeks moving forward is to not have self-inflicted wounds and execute well."

Winning the Turnover Battle
Both teams enter Saturday looking to improve their ball security after turnovers played significant roles in their most recent contests.

Campbellsville committed four turnovers against Lindsey Wilson, with Law throwing four interceptions in the 30-21 loss. Despite outgaining the Blue Raiders 403-400, the Tigers were unable to overcome those mistakes.

Cumberlands experienced similar difficulties against Keiser, committing three turnovers that the Seahawks converted into touchdowns. Through five games, UC has lost six fumbles and thrown six interceptions, while Campbellsville's defense has forced nine turnovers, including six interceptions.

"That's a huge emphasis for both sides, just protecting the ball on offense and defensively trying to create opportunities," said Housekeeper. "They're aggressively trying to get the ball out, and we've got to make good decisions at quarterback too."

The Patriots have created eight takeaways of their own, including four interceptions and four fumble recoveries. Tion Garmon, Khalil Mollay, Brandon Burke and Major Newman have each recorded an interception, while UC has forced five fumbles this season.

"Defensively, we've got to be opportunistic," said Housekeeper. "If the opportunity presents itself, then we've got to jump on those. That's a big factor in every game, and we always want to be on the positive end of that."

Setting the Tone in the MSC
Saturday marks the beginning of conference play for Cumberlands as the Patriots prepare for a challenging stretch of Mid-South Conference opponents. Campbellsville enters at 0-1 in league play following its loss to Lindsey Wilson, while UC will look to begin its conference schedule with a victory. With both programs sitting at 4-1 and the Tigers ranked among the nation's top 15, the matchup provides an early opportunity for the Patriots to measure themselves within the conference.

"Everybody wants to get going in conference well," said Housekeeper. "We're presented with one of the teams picked to finish at the top of the conference, so it'll give us a chance to gauge where we're at in our conference."

Housekeeper believes the difference Saturday will ultimately come down to which team can execute more effectively and capitalize on its opportunities.

"We've got to find a way to gain an edge, whatever that edge is," said Housekeeper. "It's going to come down to who executes more effectively on Saturday. The emphasis for us is to execute well, not have self-inflicted wounds, protect the ball and handle the elements."

Cumberlands looks to improve to 5-1 and open MSC play with a victory when the Patriots host No. 13 Campbellsville on Saturday at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
