BOWLING GREEN, KY – After a dominant offensive performance that helped lead the No. 10 Patriots to a road victory over longtime rival Union Commonwealth, senior guard Trey Johnson has been named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday afternoon. Johnson earns the honor following a 32-point performance as Cumberlands improved to 2-0 on the season.
Johnson delivered an outstanding performance off the bench in UC's 79-75 victory over the Bulldogs, pouring in a game-high 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field. The Nashville, TN native connected on four three-pointers and went 8-of-9 from the free-throw line while adding six rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block. Johnson scored 21 of his points in the second half, helping the Patriots hold off a late Union rally.
The senior guard made his presence felt early, knocking down a pair of three-pointers in the opening eight minutes before converting a three-point play to give Cumberlands a 19-10 advantage. He finished the first half with 11 points as UC carried a 32-25 lead into the locker room.
Johnson elevated his performance after halftime, scoring 21 points while shooting 6-of-12 from the field. With Union cutting the Patriots' advantage to just two points midway through the second half, Johnson responded with a putback layup before connecting from beyond the arc to help UC regain control. He delivered several crucial baskets down the stretch, including a three-pointer with 1:42 remaining to extend the lead to 72-65. Johnson also converted six free throws in the final two minutes to help secure the four-point victory.
Through the first two games of the season, Johnson is averaging 22.5 points per game while shooting 62.5% from the field. The senior has connected on five three-pointers and is shooting 92.3% from the free-throw line, providing an immediate offensive spark in his first season with the Patriots.
Johnson and the Patriots return to action Tuesday, November 3, when they welcome No. 21 Pikeville to the O. Wayne Rollins Center and Randy Vernon Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM in Williamsburg.
