Patriots Defeat St. Francis 9-0 in Series Finale

Williamsburg, KY – The seventh-ranked University of the Cumberlands closed out its series against the University of St. Francis (Ill.) with a 9-0 run-rule victory on Saturday afternoon at the UC Softball Complex. The Patriots improve to 8-2 overall and secure the series win.

DELGADO'S BIG SWING AND CORD'S CONTROL LIFT PATS

Jessica Cord was in command in the circle, tossing a five-inning complete-game shutout to improve to 5-0 on the season. Cord allowed just one hit while working around five walks and limiting St. Francis to minimal hard contact throughout the contest.

After escaping a bases-loaded situation in the top of the first, Cumberlands wasted no time capitalizing in the bottom half. Alyssa Garcia singled and Grace Ross drew a walk before Emily Delgado launched a three-run home run to left field to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead.

Cord settled in from there, retiring the side in order in the fifth and stranding runners in multiple innings to keep the Saints off the scoreboard.

The Patriots broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Aniyah White singled to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Maleah Clinton delivered an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0, and Garcia followed with another RBI single to make it 5-0.

After Ross worked a walk, Delgado singled to load the bases. Jenna Fabela then lined a two-RBI single down the left field line, and Kristen Smith doubled to deep center to bring home two more runs, pushing the lead to 9-0 and securing the run-rule victory.

Delgado finished with three RBIs in the contest, while Clinton, Garcia, and Fabela each drove in runs during the decisive fifth inning surge.
